best cheap case that protects well

i am looking for a good case for cheap that will protect my cues well

I saw I can get a 2x3 sterling wave case for about 104. Is there anything that is cheaper and just as good?

Meuller's has 2X4 Porpers for $79.95 in stock, choice of colors too. They are good quality (made here in the San Fernando Valley) not far from me, and for that money it's hard to beat them. Meuller's owns Porper cases - so they have really good deals.

By the way, it's better to get the slightly larger case if you decide to add a break cue later on.

I guess I should explain the difference between the foam core interior and ours.

Foam Core = a case where the interior is made of hardened foam. Think of the expanding foam that you might use to insulate your house. This same stuff in a different mixture is squirted into steel molds and expands to fill the mold. Steel rods which are covered in a felt-like paper-backed material are inserted into the mold before the foam is added. These rods are what forms the cavities for the cues.

I don't like these interiors for two reasons. One is that the foam does not always dry perfectly flat and often leaves holes inside the form. The other is that the foam often will force it's way through the paper seam and dry into a line of small hard beads. This little line of foam rocks is then INSIDE the cavity where your cue resides.

So for that reason I think that the Porper cases and all cases like them with the foam core interior are not as protective as the padded fabric tube cases we make.

I say this since protection was the main thing that the orginal poster was looking for.

My first top-loading hard case was a Porper and I loved it back then. It had the tapered cavities that would grip the cue parts and hold them snugly in place. The new Porper cases don't have this as far as I know.

When I got into building cases my goal was to create cases which had the same properties but also be easy to insert and remove the cues. We have succeeded and the cases we make have that nice snug fit without the need to beat on the case or tip it to get the cues out.

In my obviously biased opinion there simply is not any similar case on the market with a better and more protective interior than the ones sold by Sterling Gaming.

Also, regarding size;

Our 2x3 is built on the same size tubes that most others use for a 2x2.

BUT - if you choose to overstuff the butt cavity by adding a shaft then the 2x3 can EASILY hold 2x4.
In the next batch of cases I will be adding a single layer of cloth for this purpose.
When not in use it will be practically invisible, when in use it will provide simple separation for the parts.

Overstuffed to make it a 2x5!!!!!

The point here is that we provide excellent protection and versatility in this package.
No other case maker comes close to doing the ongoing research and development we do in cue case design.

I want to say also as the original poster. The sterling wave case I have is great. The only problem I had was I was one of the first and I have to send it in to get the zippers fixed(its just hard to as it is my main case)

Now for bar leagues I was looking for something to put less expensive cues into but still have great protection.

I will be getting another sterling just gotta pick which one. For the money nothing protects as well and I have had other cheaper cases. I thought before the mcdermott one I got for 100 was great until I saw how much my cues bounced around in them.

Also as john has said sterling has offered to fix my case I just havent had the time or another case to hold my cues in that I would trust.

The only other question I was wondering is would the tube one be better for long storage of cues than the regular interior or is there no real difference?

JOHN - Do all the Sterling cases have interiors designed by you / or just certian models? - Thanks
Dan

Most of the tube cases have interiors designed by me. We are phasing out the old stock which doesn't have new interiors and replacing those with new stock as we can.

All of them have been improved to some degree whether the interior was designed by me or not.

If you have a specific model in mind I can tell you whether it has a newly designed interior or just an improved one.

As JB notes in a post below the one above, these foam interiors are, imo, less desireable than tubes or the interiors of JB's design. Ten years ago I bought my first case from Muellers, a Porper, and found that the butts had to go in joint end first. I want a case to take butts with the butt end first leaving the joint at the top.

It's something I'd want to check out.

I really like the size and style of the "fancy" case from Cue Sight and I ordered one in the black and brown combination. Just what I need.. another case to add to the 40 or so that I have behind the couch. Sheesh. I'm such a pushover for the newest toy.
