Bandildo get your facts and names straight, before you post. szamboti was the best. scruggs holds the title now.

The point is to have personal preference bandidio has added his input you added yours. cant we all just get along. Jumpin's in here to talk pool read pool and discuss stuff not to read stuff like " Bandildo " that just shows your ignorance. I am goign to stop cause i dont want a flame war.

The reason why I never did list down a top ten because of the the criteria used, if there is any. It usually is just based on popularity/personal opinion but there's nothing wrong with that. I've always considered a solidly built, cleanly made cue as a must for a cuemaker to be considered a cuemaker and whatever innovation that he adds to its construction or design that influences other craftsmen is what sets him apart or takes him to the frontline of the craft.

I have some idea who and I may need some input on these too.

2. Harvey Martin- straight forward, solid playing cue and the notable descendant to me is Zyler Cues, *...... Bert Shraeger

3. David Paul Kersenbrock - compound taper and cuemaking machinery and methods. Notable followers are Jerry Franklin, Mike Bender, Ed Young, up&coming Pete Omen, *...... Thomas Wayne

4. Ernie Gutierrez (Ginacue)- Improvements in cuemaking machinery, leather wrap, silverwork and design, flat-bottomed traditional looking points. *.... Jerry McWorter, Rick Phillipi

10. Herman Rambow, who was the guy who really put the effort in the joint. His descendants would be Ray Schuler (Rambow was his mentor) and to an extent Mike Lambros and Layani Cues who both have made great efforts in the fit design of their joints.

Just help me out with all the *.... and give your opinion as above is just my opinion coming from the stated viewpoint. You can add your favorites or contradict under the stated reasons for why I picked the above. Thanks for the help.

Oh, why not. If they've got to be still "around," then here's my list in no particular order:

Bill Schick
Pete Tascarella
Ernie Gutierrez
Thomas Wayne
Richard Black
Mike Bender
Bill Stroud
Jerry McWorter
Mike Lambros
Paul Mottey
Skip Weston
Barry Szamboti
Tim Scruggs
Joe Gold
Dave Doucette
Paul Drexler
Edwin Reyes

That's ten, right? ;-) And I want to add Schuler and South West, both of which have lost their patron.

Fred <~~~ list isn't complete

Thank goodness for the intelligent people in the group who understands my post. What I'm getting at are the originators or people that are credited for certain aspects of cuemaking, it's construction system and design concepts. The example, as Fred pointed out, was Rambo and the cue's joint and Cms who have seen that this is the area that they can best contribute in in the for of development and/or innovation.

On CNC- though Bill Stroud can be credited for this, CMs like Thomas Wayne, Joe Gold, Tony Scianelli, etc. have found ways to push the use of it to a different level and thus the 4th axis category.

With v-splicing- Spain and Szamboti are at the top of this but a few followed suit and really worked on bringing out new systems and design combinations that gets people to take notice of them.

In short, all the cuemakers could have been mentioned under the pioneers or innovators that influence/d their style.

Don't mind him Muxy. Young as you are, you are a much better person than "it" is. Actually, he's good for your exercise of restraint. It'll make you a better person. I apologize to you too as "I OWN him', I can bring him out whenever I want however I want. This mentally challenged toys name is KyuFoo(l)bah and the hypertension that I bring him will be his torture whenever he thinks of me (his worst nightmare) LOL. :p

ER<for a while there I thought he found a new master :(

Hey I dug this old thread up while looking for somthing else.

Just wondering how peoples lists might have changed for today?

Joe, Who is Don G.?

The best cuemakers I ever knew were Andy Gilbert, Chris Hightower, and me. But, then I have a small circle of friends.
This just goes to show how subjective your request is and how meaningless the replies are. Next question.

Top ten? I havent owned well played with Ten yet, until I hit a Gina, a Searing, and a Hercek I cant say but I am thinking they will be there. Of the cues I have owned and hit in no order

Gus
Bill Shick
Barry
Perry Weston (He is HIGHLY UNDERATED)
Bender
Scruggs
Kikel

Now if you were to ask my opinion of which of these shot the best I will tell you they all shot well but the Schick and the Scruggs each left me with a bit bigger smile. I did shoot with the Gus for 13 yrs, and any difference in any of these would of been like the difference between Payton Manning and Brett Favre. One holds the records now the other will one day, unless your counting MVP's.

Best cue I have owned

Royce Bunnel, the same one that makes OB 1 cues, use to have make cues and put his name on them, I have one. best playing cue IMHO

It's interesting how Dan Dishaw didn't make anyone's list. I though he was highly regarded. I bought one of his cues in the early-mid 90's when his cues were signed "DanBuilt". When I was in the market I hit with about 20-30 cues and his hit the best (to me).

In no particular order

Gus Szamboti
David Kersenbrock
Ginacue- Ernie Gurterriz (sp)
Bill Schick
Tim Scruggs
Jerry Franklin
Bill Stroud
Dennis Searing
Joel Hercek
Tad Kohara

I've only ever owned 2 custom cues in my entire life. One was a bludworth which I sold foolishly and the other is my Jim Buss custom.

Here's my list of 10 cuemakers who I would Love to get a cue from. Reading, looking, listening, and browsing are the methods I used to compile this list.

1) G or B Szamboti
2) Pete Tascarella
3) Joel Hercek
4) Bill Stroud
5) Dennis Searing
6) Richard Black
7) Jerry Franklin
8) Tim Scruggs
9) Paul Mottey
10) Bill Schick

Honestly though, aesthetically speaking, I've never seen a Tascarella or a Scruggs I didn't like the look of.

This is so subjective on many levels. I've never owned a custom cue personally and probably will never see the need to invest $1500+ in a cue.

I have seen some absolute unreal looking cues that I have drooled over! Personally I don't see how they would play any better then my production Joss or Meucci I own. Now I am not against custom cues or cuemakers. I'm sure tons of them make a great product and I have been told once you own a custom cue you'd never go back to production cues again. I can't speak to any of that since like I said I've never owned one. I always felt the game was in the player and if your a good shooter you could shoot with any cue handed to you. So it all comes down to what your most comfortable with and what in your mind you feel you shoot better with.

From what I've seen I like Schon's, Joss, Tim Scruggs, Trancella, Helmsettler.

Royce Bunnel, the same one that makes OB 1 cues, use to have make cues and put his name on them, I have one. best playing cue IMHO

i ran into one of Royce's cues about a year ago. it played extremely well and spun the cue ball like very few other cues i've ever tried could. it was a great looking BEM merry window!
