Best Hitting / Playable Cue

Do most cases accommodate a 60" cue?

A great number of cue cases will accommodate a 60" cue but without joint protectors on the handle section. My Justis case will hold it (barely). My break cue is also 60".

The newer Whittens are especially good at accommodating longer cues and they will fit in with joint protectors. The new ones have the adjustable spacers.

I have an older collectible Huebler custom that's 60" long and I wanted a nice case for it. I called Paul Huebler and he had one made up in a week - a very nice luggage style case 1/2 with an extra compartment - $175 custom length. I like the old luggage style cases and Hueblers is one of the best. I have a feeling the style will be coming back soon.

Damn Chris...sweet cue.

I play with a longer cue also (59"), due to being 6'2" with long arms. Custom Pechauer. I've shot many cues, and I think I could get used to pretty much all of them, assuming they were reasonably solid and had a taper that I liked. My pechauer hits differently than other pechauers I've tried. Mine has a very "quiet" hit. Not much sound to it. Not sure exactly why, but it works for me.

Best cue I ever played with is My Szamboti:

Hit is so subjective

OK, I hate to be the wet blanket BUT...

to each their own.

Personally, I love my Capone. I like the crisp hit and I like the way it sounds when I hit a ball. I know the way it sounds has nothing to do with playability, but isn't that half of what makes a cue "hit great"?

On the flip side, I bought a $121.00 Lucasi with a rosewood butt and Radial pin. This cue plays almost as good as alot of custom wands that I've paid 10x the amount for.

i also have to say that kershenbrock made a incredible cue, i have hit with several early ones..'69 and a '70. all i can say is wow.

The best cue I ever hit a ball with was one I built for an older gentleman back in Missouri several years ago. I have played with the same cue I built 14 to 15 years ago, but his cue hit better than mine, but too bad for me it was already sold. I would have liked to have kept that cue. That cue had the closest thing to auto-pilot on it that I have ever felt. I have built many cues that hit as good as mine, but something about that cue set it apart. My aim with it was dead on and I could move the cue ball effortlessly. Maybe I should try to buy that cue back from him and dress is up and play with it as is was a plain 4 pointer with a only few ivory diamonds. I finally did that to my simple four point cue with a few ivory diamonds. I laid a bunch more inlays in it and put a python wrap on it. Turned my plain Jane into a head turner. If I got his back I would do the same.

My Balabushka

The sweetest hitting cue I have ever played with is My Balabushka. It is now over 40 years old and in a safety deposit box along with the authenticity papers from John Wright (Chi), 12 original Balabushka/Szamboti shafts, shipping tube from George, and an official $23K offer from a dentist in Dallas, TX.
I won the cue from the original customer (Gordon Guy) 2 weeks after he received it from George. After beating him out of his last $225 I allowed him $75 on the cue and then beat him out of the $75.
It is the cue Buddy used on his first real "Road Trip" with me. I played "On The Road" with it for over 20 years.
I have been told the cue appears in some kind of Blue Book of cues somewhere but I have never seen the book.
Now that I am getting back into playing - I play with a Lucasi (on Buddy's recommendation) that I bought on eBay for $79 - I know it's hard to believe but I really can hardly tell any difference in the hit or feel.

Mine...plain jane Nitti cocobolo, leather wrap, phenolic joint, ivory ferrule, great hit.

#1 for me is my Nova Custom, made by Nubs Wagner. 18.25 oz, 12.5 mm, 14" taper, SS joint, has a great hit, and feel.

also my Lucasi Cue hits very well, am using the predator shaft with it, wouldnt hesitate to play with it in a big time pro tournament.

First of all, to Dooziexx: I am still wiping the drool off my keyboard as I type. My favorite is a toss-up and they are both sneaky petes. My buddy has a Mike Webb that is just awesome and I received a sneaky pete from Scot Sherbine of Proficient Billiards a couple of months back that plays incredibly. The Sherbine, in my opinion is an absolute steal for only $250 and a cue that I will never let go, no matter how many cues I own in the future. Here is a pictures from his website which shows the exact cue I had him make me.

Hi Dave,

Does you friend have the Webb Cue with the extention piece? Mike has been making me a jump/break/extention cue for two years. Everytime I see him, he just sold the one for me and is making me another. I think Mike is one of the most underrated cue makers out there. He's a great guy to boot! He and Barry Cameron are a great team of cue repair guys. The Joss Tour is so lucky to have both of them!

Hey CK,

He does not have the extension. It is a fairly old wrapped sneaky pete that just plays incredibly. Mike certainly is a great guy and you find a more honest person out there. It's always nice to see him busy at the events because it shows that people value the service he provides. I would literally wait a year to see him if I needed work on my cue.

Regards,
Dave

I agree with Dooziexx, Bender's play great. I love mine and also my Bender off-shoot, an Omega/DPK. My very first custom cue was a Capone that I bought off a friend. I questioned him on why he was selling it and he said the cue didn't feel right to him. For me, the Capone hit okay and eventually I sold it.

I've hit with a Franklin era Southwest with micarta ferrules and it was silky smooth. Very little deflection and minimal amount of feedback, probably one of the 'surest' feeling cues I've hit with to date. Cogs and Gilberts hit very nice as well with the latter having an ivory joint, its buttery soft.

As for sneaky petes, I love my bender sp.. I recently had an ivory ferrule installed on it and now it plays just like my $3000 bender... I only use the bender sp for APA leagues.. Art Cantando (Barry Szamboti protege) also make great SPs. I picked up 2 during the Midwest Expo and both sold like hotcakes!!! Heres pics of my bender sneaky pete...
