OK guys i'm in the market for the best Low deflection shaft for my Josswest & my Paul F. Mottey.
Which one is the best & what price can I get it for?
I'm pretty sure the size is 5/16 x 14 looking for 11 to 11 3/4 tip.

Im thinking a predator z for about $200.00 or maybe an ob. Would that be in the right direction?

Almost all cues will have low deflection at 11 mm diameter due to the fact you do not have to go all the way to the edge of CB to apply english, and the fact the shaft is thin enough to bend so it cancels deflection, and end mass of tip lighter than a 13 or 14 mm.

Even with low deflection shaft you still have to aim different for stun with english shots, or long shots with english. Depending on your bridge location

With 11 mm shafts , you have to be extra careful with cue elevation, than a 13 or 14 mm,

You'd think a pool forum would be a great place to get answers for something like this, but it actually can backfire.

Instead of getting one or two expert opinions you'll see thirty opinions, some of which are informed... and others are just guys who tried exactly one shaft, liked it, and never looked back.

At some point, someone will say they tried one and didn't like it and went back to their regular shaft. Then there's usually a big argument about whether LD is necessary at all or just hype.

It's a pretty popular question so you can run a search and see those thirty opinions, or I can just cut to the chase and tell you the two most common ones mentioned on this forum are predator (specifically the Z2) and OB (specifically the OB2). If you want to base your decision on what a bunch of other people like, those are probably the shafts you're looking at. IMO it's a subjective tossup which one is "better", I like the OB2 but I can switch to a Z2 at any time and it seems to play basically the exact same.

My advice: skip the forum recommendations and find someone at the pool hall with both shafts. Hit balls with both of them. See which feels better.

If possible, try to find a cue maker who makes low deflection shafts that are not laminated. I've found these to be a lot better than the laminated ones.
I agree, trying a shaft before they purchase is a good idea, especially if you don't have a lot of experience with low deflection shafts.

This is excellent advice, try as many as you can. Look at my signature, they're great shafts to.

C'mon man, do a quik search. This topic has been done to DEATH. Just venting a little, but , seriously?

Listen, I have seen a lot of good advice here on AZ.
I think I know which shafts But I was looking for info on prices.
Not only that, but maybe new shafts were made in the last year that I was not aware of.
Yes not all advice is good but I do have SOME common sense to weed them out.

I think you should hit with a predator/ob before shelling out 2 bills for them. There's NO WAY that no one in your pool hall as them; in fact, you'll be hard pressed to find someone WITHOUT them.

As mentioned, LD shafts are acquired tastes. If you play at a B or higher level, I don't think the change to LD shafts are worth it at all. Stick to traditional maple, just move up. If you're not at that level, I think it could be worth learning the game ground up using LD shafts, but you'd still have to pick the one you like most. And they all hit REAL different, and no one can tell you what's better but yourself.

For me personally, I absolutely hate the OB-1 and OB-2. I can't stand the sound nor the feel in my backhand. Everything is off. The OB Classic is a lot more tolerable. The predators are nice on certain cues, but I don't like them on everything. I like them on a SS joint though. And Mezz probably makes the best LD out of all of them imo; best quality wood as they don't resort to any of that pie-constructed balsa wood-esque shafts. They feel and look like a traditional cue and deflect like a predator.

i've tried pred314, mezzwd700, ob1 and I've settled with a tiger ultraxLD... love the tiger shaft, has so much feel and a solid hit.

If you are looking for "best price" then just post a thread in the wanted section and say what you are looking for.
You will get a much better response.
Happy hunting

I've shot with an OB2, Predator Z2 and Tiger X Ultra LD and I have to say my favorite is my Tiger LD. I'm not quite sure how to describe the hits of these shafts but I'll say that when I hit with my Z2, while a great shaft, it feels a bit weird. I feel like the shots are just barely in control from the feedback from the shaft. The Tiger shaft always feels in control, and the sniper tip on it feels great to shoot with as well. I like shooting with the OB but my problem with that shaft is that you get almost no feel out of it. It's hard to gauge your difference in stroke or shot when it all feels the same.

muecci ultimate weapon shaft is 11.25mm and price is $220. Never tried one.

I agree not because it is Muecci, but because of 11.25 mm Dia, all shafts will have less CB deflection at 11.75 and lower dia due to increased flexing, and comfortale bridging, and fact do not need to go all the way to edge of CB
I have Muecci for 30 years, it was 13mm did not like it, i turned the shaft down to 11.5 mm, i still play with original shaft, love it. I bought a $30.00 cue from Walmart (to get 2nd shaft) turned down the shaft to 11.5 it plays same as original shaft

For someone that has 183 posts, you should be helping not being a troll. Sure the topic has been searched quite a bit, but times are always changing, people are always trying out new shafts and new shafts are always coming out. So the best way to keep with new info is to post a new thread. So next time dont just rip on someone instead move on or be helpful and post some links.

My sentiments exactly. We should be encouraging people to post and keep this place alive... almost every topic in the pool universe can be found with a search so should we just search and never post.
This isn't an archive... it's a forum.

I use predator but........

A guy that was in Cape Girardeau, Mo that makes cues, makes his own laminated shafts. They played pretty sweet. After that I know there are some other great options out there.

Your so right. We just got to sift through the other stuff.
