Best Method to Trim a Mushroom?

i havent read the answers but my 2 cents is give it to a cue repair man
im tired of trimming my ferrules....:D
 
I use a tip burnisher on a regular basis and it prevents/removes mushrooming. Haven't had a problem with it in years.
 
My tip installer guy presses my Moori med tips in a vice before installing them on my cue. Result...hits crisper, performs fantastic, lasts longer, and absolutely doesn't mushroom.
That tip will last you over a year, so I don't see the need to do my own maintenance...get a new tip and have it pressed, then it becomes maintenance free :-)
 
Mushrooming

I charge $10 labor to put on a tip with my Hightower lathe. That includes trimming any mushrooming that tip develops--FOR LIFE!! Tips that mushroom need trimmed, not burnished. Visit your local repairman.
 
Actually how much does it cost for a cue repairman to install a tip on for you guys in US? Just labor cost itself.

Thanks for all the replies guys, but I do have a lathe at home, and I do trim all of my tips using it, but when I'm at the pool hall, and all of my buds have mushroomed tips, I use Andy's too to trim them. It works good, and I don't trim the ferrules. My problem is that the blade has worn, and it doesn't cut as clean as before. I was just wondering where I could buy a blade if they were available. It's a ton easier to do it on the spot, and I like making their tips look good right away. I got a hold of Andy. He told me to buy a sharpener, and that blades are not available. Just seems funny that those blades are made for his shaver only. Oh well. I bought 10 of them. That should hold me over.:grin:

Ahh, if we could all be so lucky as to have a 'local repairman'.

It's because when you burnish a mushroomed tip, all you are doing is pressing the sides back flush with the ferrule. Eventually, the sides expand back out again. You want to actually physically remove the mushroomed material. That way there is nothing there to spring back out.
