This arguement should probably be prefaced by discipline, but if you look at the player with the highest winning gambling percentage, there is one name that jumps out at me as the best money player over the past 10-15 years ....

Jose Parica

Now, flame all you want all you Efren fans but i'd be willing to bet my home that Parica has a higher winning percentage than Efren .... Jose just plays so damn strong for the dough, it's unbelievable ....

Another super strong money player is James Walden. This guy does'nt get mentioned with the John Shmidts(sp) and the SVBs but to tell you the truth, other than Parica, he'd be my pick to beat any of those champions in a marathon race. Walden is a friggin monster for the dough and pound for pound the best all-around/all-games player ...

What say you?

I am going to go with Alex THE LION Pagulayan. He weighs 110 pounds and 109 of it is HEART.

I have never seen or heard of him backing down from anyone at any time. If he is staked he plays his heart out - if he is loser and the backers pull up then he digs in his pocket to keep going.

And no one goes looking for him to play some.

I heard that the Taiwanese guy is the money king and all but he doesn't have to like it playing Alex. Have they ever matched up? What's the record between them?

(dammit Mike, you're ahead of me) :-)

See it for yourself. Orcollo vs. Yang. Race to 60, but don't remember for how much.

That's against Orcullo not against Pagulayan. I was wondering if Alex and Yang have matched up.

I don't even know where Alex stands on the Philippine pecking order - isn't he like third tier now? :-)

Anyway I have never heard of anyone offering to play Alex even and he has declined.

Have to agree with yall.. Alex is the best money player alive today and has more heart than everyone but Chris Bartrum.

I don't think anyone can fade the top filipinos, even a Yang or SVB. When I see a player who can go to Manila and play the best players and get out with the money, then I will say he is the greatest. Yang beat Dennis exactly one time. Could he do it again, maybe?

Is there anyone who could survive a couple of weeks in Manila and get out winners against the top filipinos? Very doubtful. The filipinos collectively are the best money players today. When someone can beat Alex, Dennis, Lee Van, Gabica, Warren, Ramil, Francisco and Ronnie then they will be the greatest player alive. It won't ever happen though. The filipinos have too much collective firepower and will wear down anyone who tries to beat them.

Kind of reminds me of 7/11 in the 60's, with Johnny Ervolino, Jersey Red, Johnny Irish, Boston Shorty, Richie Ambrose and New York Blackie lined up and waiting. No one got out with the money. They might beat one guy, but the next one would get him, or the next, or the next. They would just wear you down with all that firepower.

I would have to agree with James Walden. He's from around my hometown. I've watched him play Buddy Hall, he beat Alex Pagulayan, and even gave Michael Coltrane the 7. Tulsa is (was) a breeding ground for strong players. Why do you think Gabe Owen is so good?

funny thing is that he's so unassuming and he never gets the credit that he deserves. People can say and think what they want, but for my money in a race to 100 or so, I'll take James over all of those poster boys.

edit : and before you ask, no i am not looking for action

James is pretty low key most of the time. And he can sure dab it. But I don't think you really want to bet big on him getting there in a race to 100 against some of the poster boys.

Those guys have been around the block to and they know James. I am pretty sure if James wants to play then Alex and company will gladly oblige.

And on top of that the window is open if anyone wants to go to the Philippines and try. I said something about how much could one bet if one really did come to the Philippines and want to bet real high and was told that $500,000 could be bet. I didn't get the feeling that this was an empty promise either.

I think if someone were able to go there and take down all the big guns then they better bet REAL HIGH because they would be out of action for the rest of their life.

you could be right my friend, but one thing's for sure, the poster boy will have a dog fight on his hands ...

Trust me, when James is right none of them have to like it . Champion or no champion

Out of action for the rest of their lives no way.. maybe a couple of days until they got a different backer or raised the money up to play you again..

Some of the posts, re. the Filipinos, etc. have been stating their choices as to who can beat who - as in who is the best player......But the op asked, "Who plays the best for the money" - not, who is the best player. That said, two guys that I think are two of the best all time players for the cash/$$$ are.....David Matlock and Jack Cooney.
