Best normal deflection shafts

Schmelke.

I experimented with some different inexpensive cues from him and one that was more expensive, but not a ton of money compared to many custom cues, with one PTO and one regular maple shaft (different diameters, again, trying to see what I like).

His regular maple shafts on all the cues are straight, well made and seem fine to me, but I'm no cue expert. I don't know how "LD" the PTO maple shaft is, but I like it a lot.

I have a regular maple shaft custom made by Schmelke that I would put up against just about anybody's.

I had him use a "premium" blank and it is really white and has good straight grain. It is perfectly finished and is super smooth.

I had him use a 1/2" XTC ferrule on it and there isn't very much deflection that I've noticed.

The price is way less than what most cue makers will charge you and they have super customer service.

Have the same ferrule on both of my shafts as well.

Ditto on the customer service. He forgot that I'd ordered the two shafts with different tip end diameters, I called and then sent it back and had the correct one within a few days.

I really don't have much frame of reference with different kinds of cues, so my opinion isn't as informed, but even the cues I purchased from what he had on hand that weren't very expensive are straight and true and feel just fine.

southwest (original taper)
bluegrass
searing
szam (both G & B)
gina
tad
mcdaniel/scruggs
black boar

no particular order....in stock configuration these shafts vary from maker to maker leaving it up to the consumer to decide which one is his/her cup of tea and those that understand how mods: ferrule/tip/tip height/taper) effect play will often have their equipment modified

I ordered a Mike Gulyassy SPTX shaft several years ago. I still like it a lot; traditional maple with some ld characteristics. Mike will make any of his shafts to whatever specs you want - diameter, collar, ring work, pin, etc.

Although it might be considered a low(er) deflection shaft, I'd add a Mezz WX700 shaft to your list of potential shafts to try. It looks and feels like a traditional shaft with just a bit less deflection and a great taper and you could have one delivered to your door in a few days.
