Every time I turn around I see another player from the Phillipines dominating every one, anyone have any idea as to who is the best player known of in the Phillipines? Are they known to be better than those coming to the U.S.? Just curious?

I may have spelled phillipines wrong I apologize.

I know who Efrin is if that is who you are refferring to, I mean a player who is known to be the best but hasn't really seen the limelight in the states ect.. ?

A fantastic player from the Philippines who has seen little action in the states in this decade is Antonio Lining. He did, of course, play the Camel tour in the late 1990's.

Yeah, I think Elton John did a song about him once upon a time.

"Lee Van, Lee Van won big money" or something like that.

That is what got me to wondering I have seen his name occasionally I think but this guy went right through alot of players, not just tournament players but seasoned road players as well, especially against orcollo who from what i understand just recently gave efrin the eight and beat him?

LVB seems to have Orcullo's number. on their head to head matchup's, Orcullo won only a few games. LVB does however, having trouble playing against Chao, especially on tv. seems to fade on the latter matches. hope to seem them play some moneygames.

Can anyone confirm this? This would be the first time I ever heard of anyone giving Efren weight.

John

pletho, I think you need to point your question to someone on the ground in the Philippines. One person that I can think of is Edwin Reyes. Because he is a poster here, he can articulate well, and he is pretty much embedded in the pool community there. Another reason he would be a good person to answer your question is because he also has a good sense of the pool world outside of the Philippines so he'll be able to make sesible comaprisons to the Filipinos we are all familiar with and non-Filipino pros as well. I also think that he sponsors a few young up-and-coming Pinoy's as well.

Jay Helfert (another poster here) also got a good sense of the abbundance of talent in the Philippines when he went to World's there last November. But Edwin Reyes would be the one who could rattle off countless names you never heard before off the top of his head, of guys that known pros would be reluctant to give weight to.

Some guy who drives a cab in the day time wearing nothing but a tank top, shorts, and flip flops can come into the pool hall take a house cue off of the wall and do amazing things with the cue ball! On equipment that would make most of us turn up our nose in protest no less.

best??

I think the right word is BEST. STRONG i'll accept. Like here in US, there is also probably quite a few names that have not been in the big picture because of lack of $$$ to travel abroad. Many of these Filipino's are travelling with backers or should i say financiers that are willing to throw away their money because of their trust.

for me I would not consider anybody the best. A year or after Ten years somebody will again shows up from somewhere we have never heard before and will take away all the spot light. I would probably prefer strongest of its ERA.

For example: Mr. Willie Mosconi was the strongest pool player on his era.

Right now IMHO Efren's Era is done and this young filipinos are now starting to show up. Also, lets take a look at Mr. Earl Strickland he was also a very strong player back then on his Era. But, now they are both beatable by the new comers.

So, basically its just a matter of time to any of us that plays this game.

I will give Efren weight, if he makes a ball, he wins. The only condition is that I get all the breaks and BIH after break..:D

Seriously, I have never heard about anyone giving him weight. I was in Manila in May, and discussed the Efrenmania with a very seasoned player called Oscar.

He told me that in his opinion the upcoming players would never reach Efrens level. I asked him why, and he said that when Efren was younger and practised, he used to play rotation with a double set of balls! That means 30 object balls on the table. Imagine how you had to move the white to get position. He claimed that the players of today dont have the patience to do that.

Many of us have been been soundly beaten around The Middle East by a very talented Phillipino guy called Elmer Haya who was working as a coach in Kuwait for quite some time, but am not sure where he resides now. Took me apart in the last stage of a World 8 Ball Qualifier where I recall him running 5 racks in a row and missing only two pot attempts (both kicks) in a race to 11. He didn't much like the tactical frames he was dragged into, but a high class 8 ball player and considerably better at 9 ball. Not necessarily one for the future, more just one to avoid now:)

No offence, but I think he couldn't have gained the nick "Magician" and a Hall of Famer without weight.

None taken. But I don't understand your point. Efren is the "Magician" for his magical shots that most players don't see and wouldn't shoot if they did see them. He is in the Hall of Fame because of his tournament accomplishments.

Since I have been playing pool and became aware of the legend Efren Reyes every story about him involves him giving weight when it comes to gambling or playing even for relatively small stakes (ex. Corey and Efren playing rotation even for $100 a game).

I have heard that Efren has been beaten a few sets even by Orcullo but not that Orcullo ever gave him weight.

So again, for clarity's sake, can anyone confirm that Orcullo or anyone gave Efren weight in the last 20 years and if so what are the details.

No problems. However, I do hold the view that all the tournament accomplishments that he has gathered in the past relatively means weight. But before anything else, do review pletho's post, he said Orcullo gave Efren the eight (8). Are we on the right frequency in the first place?
