It would seem to me that anyone in the Philippines that was that strong would immediately be contacted by Puyat. It wouldn't be some dormant secret, since if a player shows a modicum of talent in pool, they will be in action. It's their lifeblood.

So, any names you'll hear, are known players, but maybe not as well known. Gandy and Leevan are probably two of the latest that have broken through, but we've heard their names for 5-10 years now.

Can anyone confirm this? This would be the first time I ever heard of anyone giving Efren weight.

John

Dennis did beat Efren at 9-Ball, more than once. And Busti too, and Alex as well. I heard he had the most trouble with Alex. That was when they were calling him the money king of the Philipines. Until early this year, when Lee Vann beat him four out of five meetings at Bugsy's Lair.

Anyone know what ever happened to Edgar Acaba? About 15 years ago he was a monster - not sure why he never came over here and competed more than he did. Nice guy too, awesome game.

Orcullo vs Efrin

Hello, At shooters in Olathe kansas the big buzz going around when I got there was that orcullo had recently given the eight to efrin and beat him, if this is true or not I am still not sure, it is just what everyone seemed to be talking about, because alot of people were expecting orcullo to possibly win the 3,000 entry 10 ball ring game.

I just wanted to clarify my statement earlier that it was what i heard not a statement of fact, even though I was amazed from what I understand about orcullo's game it may be possible????

Just a tid bit of info that might be interesting to those of you who do not know, a friend of mine at the 10 ball tournament Scotty Townsend matched up with warren kiamco in a 8 ahead set of ten ball on the bar box for a dime and many people were betting on warren but he never got the coin on his side, obviously he lost, most people highly underrate scotty's game now as he is getting older they just haven't seen him play alot, I lived in the same town and played in the same rooms with him many times, he is amazing on a bar box and fearless.

No problems. However, I do hold the view that all the tournament accomplishments that he has gathered in the past relatively means weight. But before anything else, do review pletho's post, he said Orcullo gave Efren the eight (8). Are we on the right frequency in the first place?

I don't think so. In the USA "weight" is a poolroom term for getting a handicap. In horse racing the favorite has to carry extra weights to even out the field. So in pool a player gives up "weight" when he spots someone.

I think you mean the "weight" of Efren's accomplishments have earned him his moniker and the Hall of Fame spot, with which I wholeheartedly agree.

Still I don't think Orcullo or anyone else has given Efren a spot and beaten him. Not that they couldn't depending on the circumstances but from a business perspective it would be tantamount to action suicide to do so. I have often killed my action just by playing and LOSING to good players. It seems just the fact that I played them is enough for the nits who play as good as I do to ask for a handicap. So I can only imagine what that would do for Orcullo's prospects if he dared give Efren weight, win or lose.

I think for now we can chalk this up to the type of poolroom runour that has the guys in the corner playing races to 3 for $10,000 when in fact they are playing races to 9 for $10.

The best player in the Phillipines is Efren "Bata" Reyes without a doubt. He has the best Filipino record to date in both money matches and tournament victories against all comers. The Phillipines has some awesome players but Efren stands above them all.

Yes I think that between the top players in the Phillipines it's pretty much a tossup each time they play. But has anyone beaten Efren while giving him weight? Has anyone given him weight?

The word I got from my "sources" in the Philipines is that Efren is playing great right now. He is beating everyone playing Rotation and Ten Ball. He ain't quite done yet!

For pletho, its PHILIPPINES. Only the second p is double. And for bcf, in English its FILIPINO, in Tagalog it is PILIPINO when referring to the people.

I am glad that somebody still remember Edgar Acaba. You are one of the few that I look forward to hearing from. You have always been insightful in your threads and replies.

He still got his game and still one of the well known old guards back in Manila. The best thing about him is he does not look like a pool player at all. That's why when he was still here, we won a lot of money games because nobody thought that he could play at all!! Well, they found
out the hard way....

Anyways, Edgar is well and is still active in the pool scenes in the Philippines. He is still an awesome player and the last I heard from him is that he opened up a poolhall in Pasay City, a suburb of Manila. He is also busy developing new players and organizing tournaments for these up and coming players.

He has not been back here in the States for a long while. I heard that Edgar and Dodong Andam are trying to put up an association of pool players which will lead to international exposure.

Your query brings back some good old memories of the 90's when I used to go around with these guys and getting some good actions all around the country.

Just got off the phone with Efren, he never got weight from Dennis. Just saw Edgar last week at One Side. Still playing but not as often as before.

I spent some time in the Philippines and met Edgar about 1991-1992 time frame - he is definitely one of the greatest players I have met from over there - right up there with Dodong - I wish them both well with their new endeavor! It's great to see how the Filippino players are constantly giving back to the sport and the community - it shows their graitude for the fans support over the years. Thanks for your comments!

Efren said the same thing yesterday when he was at my place playing a few games of chess and mahjong. He didn't get weight from Dennis.

...just kidding...

jsp <~~ wishes he too can just pick up a phone and ask Efren any sort of question

Dodong Andam had been sick and out of action for a while. He's also had some domestic problems which for obvious reasons should stay that way, domestic and private.

He is still a force to reckon with. Don't let his droopy eyelids fool you. Those suckers open up like a pair of heat-seeking missiles when he is in action!!

Not a lot of these young pups want to tangle with him a lot because they know his reputation and skills.

Dodong Dadiangas has been into mahjong lately, or so I heard! :p
Seriously, the young pups should learn a thing or two from him. He's one of
the rare Filipinos who's not flashy on his cue ball, going 3 or 4 rails to get
position. He always opts for the simple out as much as possible, a cosmo
out in American lingo, while Edgar Malabon is more of a analytical mind. He
loves to play mind games and complicate matters. He usually dogs the hard
shot, tie some balls up and bore you to death. That's how he gets you...

I saw a match where someone gave him the 8 ball race to 9 in 9 ball for a few hundred about 8 or 9 years ago at a place called Players here in Los Angeles.
True story. Efren won.

So its just hearsay. I was in US yonks ago but then I don't even know what's stick games let alone its street culture. There's a difference in our interpretation but basically I think the same. Notwithstanding the fact that Efren is catching up on his age, he's Philippines number one powerhouse to date and for someone to give him the weight or eight or whatever and beat him..simply cannot click. Thanks anyway.
