Best Playing Cue Builder

Simple….The cue is a representation of the cue maker’s skills and I do not mean artistically, i.e., design.
It’s the culmination of his ability to craft a cue which involves the anatomy of a cue more than its appearance.

The only fair way to answer the question to to base it upon cues I’ve played with over my many decades of
pool playing. There’s more cue makers that I haven’t tried any of their cues in contrast to the ones that I have.

Based on my experience, among active cue makers, Bob Owen ranks at least on the 2nd rung from the top on
the ladder of great cue makers. I think that’s fair since everyone could have a favorite cue maker, even when they
never owned or even tried one of their cues. My opinion is based on playing with a couple of Owen cues and comparing/contrasting the way my cues play. It’s not just me either. Everyone trying my Owen cues praised the feel.

If I could convince Bob to build me a Sneaky Pete cue, I’d treasure it as much as my other cues just because of the
cue’s playability. Pretty does not equate with performing and Bob Owen builds cues that exceed one’s expectations.

And gosh, if you want pretty, Bob is like a wizard and he has produced some designs that are creative masterpieces.
There are a lot of good cue makers but you’ll search hard and long to find another one as friendly & gracious as Bob.

About pool playing and cue builders, I think it’s common knowledge Stroud was a player. Also heard Searing was pretty strong. I know of others but drawing a blank at the moment. Maybe someone should start a new thread opif it hasn’t been discussed previously.

Price.

The less you have to pay for performance the better. I bought the cheapest cue I can find brand new and swapped the tip and sealed the shaft and it shoots good.

I have/had pricey cues but I don’t prefer them. I got convinced and ordered a 4K cue because someone said deep down I’m a real pool player and I should have something nice for the occasion. LOL.

At this point in my pool playing I want to be one of the top players in my town all while having the cheapest playing cue. It’s my new challenge. When I was actively playing people will always ask to see what I’m playing with. Now I want to shock them when they ask how much and I say $99 with $20 tip. So far nobody has asked. 😂

bill stroud was a true pro
jack madden is one
george balabuska played okay
pete margo champ but really didnt make them himself i think.
sailor played well
dk played fine

I actually use to have one. 😂

Someone gave it to me and I hated it. As I got older I started to appreciate it.

It’s a large cigarette. Hahaha

Lol, that was you! JK. Did you have the butt cored or just added a shaft?
Those winstons were readily available. Mine was bone stock.

I was given one because my friends’s parents owned a liquor store. So they got free merchandise. I had plenty of camel shirts, lighters etc…etc….

Whenever I hear people discuss "simple" cues, not fancy, or cues without a lot of detailed inlays, design, etc. -- all of that takes time, and time equates to labor cost and in the end is reflected in the price of the final product. So when people say simple I always think they mean less expensive as there's less labor costs and time that went into the cue. Thus, there's no artistic, aesthetic, etc., aspect or cost to the cue. For me, I am not that good at all. And beautiful cue doesn't do anything for me. I can appreciate one, but it doesn't get me charged up, I don't enjoy playing with it, etc. So I just want a cue that is solid, feels good, and is high-quality. For me, this is a very interesting thread, so thank you everyone for posting.

2 questions... :)

Cues that play great that are not fancy lookers...Obviously Southwest. OmegaDPK and old Schons.

Cue builders that play great?
70s - Bill Stroud
80s-Early 90s - Joe Gold
Today? Probable Jerry McWhorter and Cody Cash.

So the various cue makers referenced on this thread -- for their basic, non-fancy cues -- are these cues under $1000? Under $500? What's the broad range on some of these? Thanks.

Probably 1200 to start or so I would think. Some you have to buy from resellers and they will be more. Could be wrong, maybe Joey or Tony will post.

The Guerra (ebony/Olivewood) sneaky I am looking at is listed at 8500rmb (1,200$) and the Tonkin (Purpleheart/Curly Maple) 9000rmb (1250$)
The Guerra is unplayed, the Tonkin has had a rack or two played with it.
These are prices on Xianyu APP not from either directly.

I did see a road guy who played real sporty with a beer logo cue, here in Ohio, back around 2005, I made a couple of comments off to the side about the cue, and he said he was Tascarellas nephew, and he had made it for him.
