Mastering Pool was the first book that I picked up for straight pool. Coming from a 9-ball background with limited 8-ball, it changed the way I look at the game. My analysis of a rack following the breakshot as far as balls on the rail, primary and secondary break balls is world's away from where it would be without this book.

It was a hard choice, but I chose "play your best straight pool"-by phil capelle.

There is alot more info in this book and phil goes a bit more in depth about things.

i've read and reread all the books on 14.1. they are all fine but pale in comparison to the excellent videos on the subject. Remep's videos are great as are Schmidt's. harriman has a 280 ball run video with commentary out there somewhere but i have not seen it. my advice is to forgetabout the books and buy the vids.

i have to agree and disagre with ya on this one...

the videos are great because you get to see the shots come to life, but the books are portable and you can bring them to the table with ya. plus the go a bit more in depth on the explanation of the shots.

schmidtie and harrimans runs are great. but i highly recomend the rempe stuff over them, jimmy does alot of explanation in his tape because it is a straight out instructional piece.

What he said!!

We have to stick with our homie, George, but I loved his books before I ever met him. There are plenty of useful nuggets of information on how to go about playing straight pool in this book. It was put together back when there was next to nothing on the subject and can't be beat.

I agree with everything you said. I'll just add that it is written in a lively fashion and is not dry like many instructional books are. It was written by someone with a passion for straight pool, and that shows through in a way that I haven't found in other books.

What they said! I read excerpts of Mastering Pool in The National Billiard News and wrote George asking about it. He sent me a copy! It's very well read and has been borrowed countless times. People who had played twenty years before they saw it said they learned things from it. George is the nuts!

true about the portability of books but IMHO they just don't cut it with regard to learning curve. i totally agree about rempe's vids though. they are great but that HAIR do. i keep finding that i'm not paying attention to the instruction because my astonished gaze keeps going back to THE HAIR. it's like a creature latched onto Jim's head.

i bought and read george fels book many times and scrutinized it somewhat more than your average reader. i think that george to this would attest. lol.... to Fel's credit, it is different from other books on the subject. it's an excellent book but has some inconsistencies that in and of themselves do NOT diminish from the overall tutorial. he should have probably paid a dude to recover that table however. ;)

Wasn't Mastering Pool updated, and the update titled Advanced Pool?
