best tip for play and break?

Stay away from soft tips, unless you like playing with a flat tip. 
Firmer tips are better, a good compromise is a LePro or a Triangle. If you like a hard tip for yourself, a water buffalo would be the best answer. Also, any of the medium hard to hard layered tips will suffice.... but again, the softer the tip, the more grooming you will find yourself having to do to the tip.

In my opinion the tip I would use to break with I would not use to shoot with. For shooting, I like to keep my tip perfectly maintained, no mushroom, shape of Nickel, with the edge burnished. Now, maybe it is just me, however, I have a very hard break and I have not found a tip to date that will not mushroom very quickly, except for Phenolic.
But, if I were you I would use a Hard tip, when can be a pressed tip of a hard out of the box. What I mean by pressed tip, is a Le Pro or a Triangle that has been re-pressed in a vise. When I press tips, I slightly moisten them and put them in a vise. I tighten the vise as much as possible the first day by hand. Then over a period of three more days, I tap the vise handle a half turn with a hammer each day. Now these tips come out nice and hard, and they would be no problem for shooting and breaking. I would bet that some cue repairman in area has a similar method for making hard tips.
