Best tip in the world story!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A little secret here that I learned..............

I used to work in a pool room part time and did all the tips on a huge metal lathe. I used super glue gel. Prepared the ferule and tip stuck some glue on it and ran the cutting tool up to it with light pressure wait 5 minutes and cut down and shape it. I used Kiwi clear shoe polish and brown paper from a bag to shine the side. Never had a tip come off. The one thing i did do was to lightly sand the back of the tip and then cut an x into it.
Interesting side note was that there were a number of Szamboti cues that i re tipped and on his ivory ferules he cut rings into the face so they would hold the glue better i guess. So every time i replaced a ferule i cut rings in it,if he did it i figured it was good.

I didn't know why the old man used epoxy but i do now. OVER THE YEARS OF EXPERIMENTING I FOUND THAT MANY OF THE GUYS THAT PUT THE TIPS ON WHILE THEIR USING THE LATHE CRANK THE TIP TIGHT WITH THE LATHE . NOT ALL BUT SOME. NOW THERE IS VERY LITTLE GLUE THERE TO HOLD THE TIP BECAUSE OF THE PRESSURE. AS THE TIP IS USED IT EXPANDS ACTUALLY BREAKING DOWN THE GLUE WHILE EXPANDING SIDEWAYS. SOME PLAYERS CALL IT MUSHROOMING. THE TIP WON'T USUALLY POP OFF BUT IT WILL NOT RESPOND PROPERLY DEPENDING ON WHAT SIDE OF THE TIP YOU ARE HITTING WITH ON ANY PARTICULAR SHOT.

THE OTHER REASON FOR THE EPOXY WAS BY LETTING IT SET UP A MINUTE IT IS A LITTLE THICK. YOU CAN JUST SET THE TIP ON THE FERULE WITH VERY LITTLE PRESSURE AND LET IT DRY. NOW YOU KIND OF HAD A PAD MADE BY THE EPOXY. NOW WHEN THE TIP EXPANDS SIDEWAYS OR MUSHROOMS IT DOES NOT COME LOOSE ANYWHERE.

THIS IS REALLY EVIDENT WHEN YOU TAKE THE TIP OFF TO PUT ANOTHER ONE ON. IT WILL NOT POP OFF. YOU NEED TO CUT IT OFF.

THIS OLD MAN WAS ONE SMART COOKIE. I JUST WISH HE WOULD HAVE TOLD ME WHY HE USED THE EPOXY. WHENEVER I USED ANYTHING ELSE I MIGHT NOT HAVE TROUBLE RIGHT AWAY BUT AS SOON AS I HAD ANY TROUBLE WITH DRAW OR SPIN AND I TOOK OFF THE OLD TIP I COULD SEE IT WAS ONLY HALF ON OR MAYBE 3/4 ON.
THIS WAS WHY IT WAS SO INCONSISTENT.

I HOPE THIS MAKES SENSE. HAVE A GREAT DAY

This is it. Glue them on and sand them down slowly. I burnish the tip with cardboard on the sides. Use 220 sandpaper to sand down the sides. If you cut the tip or sand it with too coarse of sand paper it wrecks the grain of the leather.

I used to use a la pro. Try a triangle tip. They are more like the old la pros than the new la pros are.

Good luck..........

Gene, im going to the pool hall tomorrow. When i see the old guys i'll ask about this Bob and see if i can get some info, lol.

nice story :)

It's not LaPro, but rather LePro...

Repeat after me... LePro...LePro...LePro... Get it now? :D

Nice story anyway.

Great story, rep for you!

I use Super Glue gel because it's quite thick.

I apply it to the ferrule liberally and a thin layer on the glue side of the tip. I gently center the tip on the ferrule with almost no pressure and let it sit overnight. I rough cut the shape of the tip with an exacto knife and then use a curved sanding block for final shaping.

Here's where my method differs, lol. I use behind the ear oil. :)

EDIT: Forgot to mention where I learned the behind the ear oil method. I saw Luther Lassiter do it in a televised match in 1980. :)

if you just took a shower or had just washed your face that's where the reserve is. darn, i thought we could keep one secret. that's premium stuff there. the mother load.

but be careful when you lick your finger to wet the side after the behind the ear oil. sometimes it's pretty strong.:rotflmao1:

Great story geno!

When I first started doing tips in S. Korea that is how I learned to do them. I bought this book "how to tip a pool cue" great for a true beginner. Anyone that wants it pm me. Now I do use a lathe but I like the method I use. I have never had a tip pop off ever. I can say one thing cheap chap stick works great to burnish a tip with, plus it will never get a sun burn if you use the expensive stuff.

Anyone who wants some tip tips call me, but if I ever run into you I do expect a nice cold beer!

i stand corrected..............

It's not LaPro, but rather LePro...

Repeat after me... LePro...LePro...LePro... Get it now? :D

Nice story anyway.

thanks for the correction. you know, i've been spelling la pro wrong for 35 years.

have a great day.

Some things we need to know...........

Dammit Geno. I told you about giving away the farm. This is getting old really fast. Between Perfect Aim, all the pool tips you give away in the forum and on the telephone and now this, there won't be a banger left to play. Nothing but tough action when you finish with them. pffftttt.

Look, the story was good. You tell a story well but you have to quit giving up the SECRETS. At least wait until I do some commentary and have you in the booth. Promise me, you will save at least one "SECRET" for the commentary booth. :(

If a person wants to learn about GenoMachino and Perfect Aim or even order his video you can go to Perfect Aim Billiards just by clicking HERE.

He'll probably just give away more "SECRETS" but what the heck, it's his life.

Get well soon, Gene.

There has to be thousands of people who want to take personal pool lessons from you.

I know you like to gamble so how about a little arm wrestling for a hundred or two?

HI THERE JOEY,

I CAN'T WAIT UNTIL I GET HEALED UP AND CAN BE AT A GREAT TOURNAMENT WITH MY FAVORITE COMMENTATOR AND BE ABLE TO SPEND EVEN JUST 5 MINUTES IN THE BOOTH.

THESE ARE 2 OF MY SHORT TERM GOALS RIGHT NOW. ALOT OF SHORTER LITTLE DAILY GOALS BETWEEN NOW AND THEN THOUGH.

THIS TIP THING IS IMPORTANT. IN THE 80'S AND 90'S WHEN THE BEST TIPS WERE LA PRO. TRIANGLE AND CHAMPION YOU HAD TO REALLY KNOW HOW TO PUT THEM ON OR THEY WOULD BREAK DOWN TOO QUICKLY.

IF IT CHANGES TO QUICKLY BAD THINGS HAPPEN LIKE MISCUES OR NOT GETTING THE SHAPE YOU WANT OR NOT GETTING THE SPIN YOU NEED. THESE ALL SPELL DISASTER FOR YOUR GAME.

HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU PUT A NEW TIP ON AND COULDN'T BELIEVE HOW MUCH BETTER IT WORKED. IT WAS SO MUCH EASIER TO MOVE THE BALL AROUND THE TABLE.

I CAN HONESTLY SAY THAT I WON TOURNAMENTS AND WON MATCHED MAINLY BECAUSE MY EQUIPMENT WAS BETTER AND THE TIP WAS A HUGE PART OF IT.

THE WAY I PUT ON A TRIANGLE TIP IS THE DEAD NUTS. IT WILL KEEP ITS SHAPE EVEN WITHOUT BURNISHING THE SIDES. IT WON'T BREAK DOWN VERY FAST. AND WHEN YOU CHANGE THE TIP ONCE A MONTH DEPENDING HOW MUCH YOU SHOOT IT WON'T BUST YOU EITHER. ABOUT $1.00 PER TIP.

IT'S REAL CONSISTENT. MOST OF THESE LAYERED TIPS I'VE TRIED I GET TOO MUCH SPIN. IT CAUSES MISSED SHOTS BECAUSE OF THIS.

ANYWAY, I'M THINKING ABOUT MAKING A LITTLE VIDEO SHOWING HOW TO DO THIS CORRECTLY AND JUST MAYBE GIVING ONE TO EVERYONE THAT EVEN JUST TRYS THE PERFECT AIM PHONE LESSON FOR FREE.

I THOUGHT THERE WAS A NEED FOR SOMETHING LIKE THIS AND NOW I KNOW THERE IS. THANKS AGAIN TO MY AZ FRIENDS HERE.

WHEN I GET THIS DONE I WILL SELL IT ALSO BUT IT WILL BE REAL CHEAP. MY STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS WILL MAKE IT POSSIBLE FOR EVERYONE TO USE MY TECHNIQUES TO HAVE THE BEST TIP POSSIBLE ALL THE TIME.

I SHOULD ALSO GET AHOLD OF TRIANGLE BECAUSE THE WAY I DO THIS ALMOST TURNS THEIR TIP INTO MAGIC. I DON'T THINK THEY EVEN KNOW HOW GREAT THEIR TIP REALLY IS.

I MIGHT JUST HAVE TO SHOW THEM............

THANKS JOEY AND HAVE A GREAT DAY...........
