Asking around for my buddy’s kid. He’s thirteen years old and just getting into billiards. What’s a good stick for about $100? Thank you for your anticipated recommendations.

I got a Players when I started. Worked very well for me. Then upgraded to another brand with carbon fiber. I also still have a Players break/Jump stick as well. A good value. Both sticks were under $100/ea so great value for starting out IMHO.Asking around for my buddy’s kid. He’s thirteen years old and just getting into billiards. What’s a good stick for about $100? 2nd vote for Valhalla by Viking.Your going to get a lot of different opinions on this one, but IMO the Valhalla, which is made by Viking in China, is the best in that price range. The shaft has a lifetime warranty on warpage. The only issue is that the stock tip sucks. You really should replace it from the start.
A few years ago when I first started playing, a guy sold me that starter kit (Kit 4 $70) for $250. My dumb ass recognized the McDermott name but didn’t know about these low end cues. When I got home and looked it up. Boy was I pissed. Got hustled and didn’t even get to play. Luckily I knew him so I called him out on it. He tried to give me some story that this one was different and made in the USA blah blah. In the end I got my money back.I like the cues in the McDermott beginners kit, which includes a cue, a soft case, chalk and maybe a tip-tapper. List was $70, but the last I looked they were sold out. I've played with two of them and they hit the ball better deflection-wise than a lot of more expensive cues. Whether they are solid long-term I can't say, but they seemed solid enough. They come with a warranty.

Kit 5, now $80. Unfortunately, all the kits are still out of stock. I found the cues only at a local supply store.
I second this. Check pawnshops. Sometimes the person pricing stuff just dosent know. Bought a Jackson Custom cue (JCC) for 30 bucks, a mystery cue with real inlays that looks nice and plays great for 25 and a Darohld Stiehl custom for 125. Also watch marketplace or craigslist. If you want something new then Players is a good option. Have one cheapo that I really like the feel of.Check area pawnshops? I found a nice '80's era merry widow McDermott in one here for $100. Did have it retipped and shaft cleaned tho...
