Why clean your shaft? I don't get it. I wash my hands not my shaft.

You should clean your shaft,its good hygiene,i think most girls like your shaft to be clean,i know mine does.:D

I have been doing shaft repair work for some time now. I have used different wood cleaners and I always try to stay away from using any abrasives especially the scotch brite steel wool stuff. I actually tried using the magic eraser just yesterday and it really does wonders on cleaning up a shaft. Nothing compares to it.

using lathe.
1. Magic eraser
2. car wax on napkin
3. remove excess with felt from old cloth
4. Burnish with leather
5 more wax, and felt to clean wax off
6 Burnish second time
On the lathe it takes about 5 minutes or less

Hmm. Nice input. Now to get the lathe ;)

Is there a way to use a hand drill if you don't have a pin? I'm thinking the heat generated by a make-shift lathe will seal the pours much better.

Tried the Magic Eraser for the first time tonight and it worked great!I have tried so many things with not much success but this works nicely and seems to be gentle on the shaft also.:D
