Leonard, that would be a serious treat. I would love to see Grady and Randi's new pool room. I normally see them at DCC but it would be great to see some of the other AZers. I'll have to check yahoo maps and see how long it takes to drive. My two amigos would have to agree on the drive. I don't like driving to tournaments more than five or six hours but with three of us wheeling, it might not be so bad.

We went to Hammer Heads first and the nice woodwork was there. The eye candy and food was at Strokers.

( now that I think about it, there was eye candy at Hammer Heads TOO...... but I didn't eat any... I have diabetes ) :)
 
im surprised cici or andy lincon hasn't responded to you yet.

Planet pool tour (now called tiger tour i think) is a good one in the northeast region, top players that usually show up are matt clatterbuck, mike davis (when he's in town), brandon shuff etc.

Some of the things I like to know about are:
Entry Fee
Number of players that normally show up
MONEY ADDED
GUARANTEES
FEES
Table Size
Coin operated or not
What percentage of the field that is paid and percentages to each finishing position?
Is there a problem with seating? NOthing worse than having to stand up most of the tournament because there are no seats available.
Game Discipline and info. races, DE or SE, one day, two day etc.
I have never traveled to the Northeast for business or pleasure so I would probably enjoy visiting there. OH YEAH..... I like to know where and what the locals like to eat. This is big for anyone from New Orleans because we enjoy our food. :D
We have never gotten the steamed crabs down-pat here in the South but boiled seafood is a no brainer with all of the boil seasonings available here.
I hear the Northeast knows steamed crabs. :D

Thanks to all AZers who contribute to this thread. I think it could help others to choose where they might vacation or play hookie for the weekend.

YOWZA! That's a little over 10 hours ONE WAY. I don't know Leonard. That's getting close to flying distance. Basically, that uses up one full day of the weekend in travel time if driving.....

Tournaments

Joey ... I agree the Midwest 9 ball tournaments in Olathe are good tournaments, getting at least 80 players up to 128. The ones in Tulsa
at Magoos are also good. They also have some pretty good ones in Oklahoma City, now at Jamaica Joes.

The Midwest 9 ball tournaments in Olathe and Tulsa are $5,000 added tournaments, with $1,000 added for 1 pocket,and $4,000 added for 9 ball. $50 entry. They run from Thursday night through Sunday. 9 ball starts on Friday night.

The Thanksgiving Weekend tournament (F-S-S) here in Wichita is a $2,000 added handicapped 9 ball tournament, and usually fills up to 128 players. It is held at Shooters billiards here. (All out of towners not known are a 11 out of a possible 12 in handicap - house rule). $20 entry fee. Shane McMinn won the last one.

In June every year, the Midwest 9 ball tour comes here for a $2,500 added event at the big Sidepockets billiards. $35 entry fee. Jamie Baracks won the last one.

Southrock, here, has a 9 ball tournament every 1st Saturday of the month with $500 added for 32 players, $300 added for 16 players. $25 entry fee, race to 6. And on the 3rd Saturday, they have a handicapped 9 ball tournament, 200% payback, $20 entry fee. Race to handicap. Marshall Rooney won the last one, Jr. Brown before that.

Hey Joey did you read Grady's flyer about the three tournaments including one pocket, banks and 9ball and four ring games ? If you can fly somewhere close to Columbia I will pick you up and drive you to Grady's and then back to the airport, I would be leaving Charlotte Nc and coming back that way so you could fly to Charlotte if it's easier. Think about it and talk it over and maybe something will work out.--Leonard

The new Dale Mabry poolroom is named "Big O's". It's a very nice upscale room with about twenty-five 9' tables (mostly Olhausen's and some Gold Crowns).
There's a bar with beer, but no liquor at present.

* I went to play poker at noon and tonight there was a promotion where the highest hand in the room from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.won a 50" Plasma TV. Another Plasma TV to be given away from 9:00 p.m. til Midnight. At 6:00 p.m. they announced the beginning of the 'high hand' period and on the very first hand, someone at the $2-$4 Limit Hold 'em table hit a Royal Flush. With nothing else going on until 9:00 p.m., I just decided to come home and kick the cat... imo :)
 
Sorry to say Joey but in SO Cal particularly LA you need a car. Everything is spread out and going from one joint to the next is a hassle. The Swanee tournament is a great event but staying in Hollywood can be a bummer. High prices and nothing happening at night in LA unless youre in the know. From Hollywood to Hard TImes is a 40 minute drive. House of Billiards in Santa Monica is about a 30 minute drive from Hollywood. The action is spread out all over the city. You'd need connections to know whats going on. And then no one wants to give it up. The best thing of all is the great poker clubs. If youre into that.
The thing I missed about the US Open One Pocket event in Kalamazoo was everything was happening under one roof and there was continuous action. That was a great event.

And I agree, I enjoyed Kalamazoo a great deal. It was a fun time.

I was thinking that if my two amigos and I get underway and start making a tournament here and there we could easily hook up with AZers in most towns. A lot of AZers are willing to give each other a shot at a few bucks if nothing more than for bragging rights online. :) If the visiting AZers lose a bunch of dough, the local AZers might put the three amigos for a night or two, you know, just to keep the suckers around. :D

With what I have in mind, I am just thinking about going to one place for one weekend. It wouldn't be a lot of traveling back and forth to mulitiple pool halls because primarily we would simply be playing in pool tournaments. Any action would be icing on the cake.

Time of the year for annual tournaments would be appreciated also. And we would not be interested in handicapped tournaments. Out of towners always get rated higher than they should be and rightly so since no one knows if the strangers are world beaters. The three of us couldn't beat a dozen eggs. :D It'sbad enough for us to have to show up at new frontiers and donate but to have a tougher handicap than we deserve at our speed is unacceptable.

Every once in a while, you catch those Northern golden boys talking and feeling good about their scores and they let the cat out the bag. They clam up right away when they realize that they are giving up the golden info like when they mention the scores they made off of you & Jay. :D

I'm not going to say that a guy by the name of Ed from up your way passed through the Big Easy and picked up a few dollars and accidentally did some name dropping. No, I'm not going to say that. :)

And I bought a Hammerhead break cue off this guy and he gives me up!! I used it when I knocked him out of the Dave Piona Memorial Tournament(a little justice for giving me up), and he told me I had the soft break going pretty good. Soft Break My A**, I was hitting them as hard as I could. John

Easy John, don't go breaking that hammerhead cue over Ed's head. I was just teasing you.

Ed did make it to New Orleans with Buddy Hall in tow (probably a year ago or so) and mentioned that he was from California and I figured that he might have known you. He never said a word about you or any other CA player (you have my word on that).

So now you don't have to go putting the hurt on Ed. Ed apparently already knows how to get under your skin. :D He doesn't have to give you up to get a rise out of you. :D

BTW, you might consider the annual Jamboree at HardTimes in Sacramento. It generally lasts longer than you asked, but it is split between 9 ball and 1 pocket. For the 3 days, you could make one of them. Gets lots of talent, usually a few pros. Every June. Lots of added cash. Calcutta and minis. Plus, a ride from the airport if you need it.:)
 
JoeyA you might want to skip Grady's tournament... me and easy-e will be there and we have 1st & 2nd place locked! :D But you should come to cheer us on and possibly settle for 3rd. It'd be fun. :)

FTR: Ed didn't win any money. Ed didn't give anyone up. He handled himself in a very positive manner. Actually I liked the guy. Hope it's the same Ed we're talking about. :D

It has been fun hearing about all of the tournaments all over the country. Each has its own idiosyncracies and I like unique places and tournaments. The different personalities of each tournament make each one special. It is very kind of you to offer a ride from the airport. All of the other offerings from AZers is appreciated, especially the one from DeadPoked and Grady's tournament; 3rd place huh? Thanks a lot, "buddy". LOL

I think I like Mike Zuglan's Turning Stone Casino but don't know if I will make the one in February of this year. I think he has two per year.

The Reno tournament is relatively inexpensive to attend unless you like the casino tables (and I do :o ). I have started a database but haven't got it structured the way I want it just yet. It's nothing more than an XCEL spreadsheet with headers at the top. Lot's of variables to consider when choosing a tournament to go to.
