BET Awards Celebrity Billiards Bash

We just had this event last night at Hollywood Billiards right here in Hollywood, California. It is part of the BET (Black Entertainment Television) Awards Week which ends with the BET Awards Show on Tuesday June 24.

You will be able to see parts of this charity pool tournament on several television networks. Entertainment Tonight and Access Hollywood had camera crews there, as well as BET network. There were many other media types there as well from magazines, newspapers and other television shows. The attending celebrities got the full red carpet treatment with streets blocked off and crowds of spectators lining the entranceway. There were several camera crews outside also interviewing the arriving celebs.

I was the tournament director for this chaotic event. When celebrities are involved, everything takes on a different nature. The tournament is secondary to the fun and festivities. Yet I must see to it that everything runs smoothly. :D

I had some good help from referees we enlisted from the local BCA pool leagues. We had eight referees overseeing sixteen tables, and they did a great job. No problems with all the big egos on board! :) In case you didn't know it, NO celebrity likes to lose, and they all want lots of air time. Did I say big egos?

I recognized many of the famous athletes participating. Allan Houston, Chris Webber, Baron Davis, John Salley and Paul Pierce were playing in the tourney. Dwayne Wade hosted the tourney but did not play. I didn't recognize many of the other players, except for Pauly Shore, Dorian Harewood and Eric Benet. Most of the players were TV actors and talk show hosts who I didn't know. Many other famous black entertainers attended just to have a good time. Chamilionaire and Ludicris were two names I recognized.

Paul Pierce ended up winning (two big wins for him in the last week!). He beat Joe Torry in the finals. The final match was two out of three games of Eight Ball, and it was a total madhouse around the table. TV cameras and photogs everywhere. Plus dozens of the guests crowding around and rooted for their favorites. And I mean really rooted, doing everything possible to shark the other player. Somehow, some way Harry Young (the ref) and I made sure all was fair to the best of our ability. The whole scene could have been right out of a movie. It was that raucous and wild!

I felt like I was in the Land Of The Giants with all these basketball players and their friends. I mean they dwarfed me. I particularly enjoyed meeting Dante Green who is a rookie on the Golden State Warriors next year. Another giant who is a fine young man.

Well, I'm glad I survived that one. One more test for the old man.

Hey, I enjoyed hearing about that event. Pool Hollywood style at its finest.

Sounds like it was a great gala to be had by all. There was a similar pool event like that in New Orleans held in February of this year, with a lot of rap stars. Jeanette Lee was in the house too: http://www.bigeasybilliardsbash.com/

Hope you had a great time, Jay. Did you have to dress up for this one, or could you come casual?

I tried to do a Google on this event, and I did come up with this. I'm not hip to all the new stars and entertainers anymore, but apparently, Eric Benet, who was present at this tournament, is quite popular.

Here's what he posted on his website about him being there: http://www.ericbenet.net/content/eric-benet-bet-awards-celebrity-billiards-bash

Also found this: Also using the awards to plug new product are Target, which will sponsor its own Targetcam coverage of the pre-awards show; Dodge, which will use its sponsorship of the BET Networks Celebrity Billiards Tournament and the BET Awards Red Carpet Event to plug its all-new 2009 Dodge Journey and the all-new 2009 Dodge Challenger; and Ford Motor Co., which will unveil its 2009 Ford Flex by providing special concierge car service to celebrities and BET talent during the awards' after-party and post-show coverage. Other sponsors include Ciroc Vodka, with the brand's marketing chief P. Diddy acting as master of ceremonies for the after-party; Coors, co-sponsor of the Billiards Tournament; Pepsi, whose DJ Division will sponsor four on-air vignettes of BET Awards nominees; Verizon Wireless, sponsor of its own Viewers' Choice Award Poll and My First BET Awards micro-series (this year's profilee is "Low" rapper Flo Rida); and Akademiks, the exclusive outfitter of the cast of "Baldwin Hills." http://adage.com/madisonandvine/article?article_id=127876

I couldn't find one mention if this event on the BET website. :sorry:

It was listed as "dressy casual". The refs were instructed to wear black pants and were given striped referee shirts with a cool Celebrity Billiards logo on them. Since I was the TD, I didn't get one. :(

The men who attended looked great, wearing expensive and fabulous threads. Linen is kind of the "in" look with them. And the women...Ohh La La!! Drop dead gorgeous gals all around, and I mean GORGEOUS! Why not in a room full of millionaires, and young ones at that.

No Alonzo Mourning? It would be awesome to get NBA players behind pool.

Anyone else notice that snooker/pool player Quinten Hahn who posts here as Chamillionaire is in real estate, and there is a rapper named Chamillionaire who also deals in real estate and apparently likes pool?

Its cool seeing Pierce enjoy his championship. He's had a crazy life.

"Zo" was originally a co-host of this event. I don't know what happened to him.
He may have actually been there. It was sooo crowded and so many very tall men!

Zo and Magic Johnson do a great celebrity charity pool tournament each year during the NBA All-Star festivities. Lots of celebs, rappers, athletes, big time sponsors... it's pretty awesome.

Zo's pretty good at pool, I've had the pleasure of watching him play up close! I was very impressed...

Excellent review on a worthwhile event Jay. I'm very envious, but glad you had the experience. Good for pool too!
