I just got a phishing e-mail from someone that made some VERY realistic copies of PayPal pages. I am wise to the tricks, but want to warn everyone to be careful and only sign into paypal via the internet, don't click on a link to sign in. Same goes for Ebay. Otherwise you might be giving your info to some scammer jerk. PayPal verified it was a scam e-mail.

Down with scammers.

I get like ten a day. What is strange is I recently created an email address just for a piece of property I have for sale and I started getting them to that address. No one would even know the email address unless they got it off the sign sticking on the property. I wonder how that happens?

Your trusted service provider would know!

If someone wants private info, first verify that it is needed by visiting the site that it claims to be directly (and not by clicking a link in the email!). If there is no sign that the info is needed on the legitimate webpage, you can use on or the 'contact us' features and ask there or fwd: the questionable email to them.

Scammers suck!

Sometimes an email address is new to you, but not new to the internet. My guruatbeerdotcom address was one that someone let lapse in the past, so after my (re)gestering it I was pre-qualified for all sorts of spam, as if I need any more.

BILLYARDS - thanks for the headsup. I'm a sucker waiting to happen: new to the internet world and too trusting for my own good. Warnings like yours helps newbies like me a lot. Just like pool scammers, the net scammers will run into Mr. Karma eventually.

I keep getting emails from Ebay asking me to update my account info. For months the emails tell me if I don't update, my account will close. Turns out this threat is a whole lot of BS.The only way could update was to fill in a blank with a credit card number.

I've never bought or sold anything at Ebay and don't carry credit cards.I just go there to check things out every now and then.Someone apparently asked me about an item I supposedly had for sale even though I have never listed anything. The whole thing made me suspicious and your post only goes to validate my suspicions.

Thanks for posting,
RJ

Got the same thing - didn't do it. Didn't seem reasonable thinking about the "grand scheme" of things that ebay would want 100 gillion people to reregister.

New scam, involving fake ebay email: you receive an email from an "ebay" member in the form of an "ask the seller" question. It looks totally legit, but there is no item description, only an item number. If you respond, the scammer has the email address associated with your ebay account. The links in the email look like ebay links, but go to the scammer's server, so if you click on one he will have your ip address. The one I got was from "jackjack14". I'm not sure how this info could be used to hijack your ebay account, but why take chances.

Well, knowing what e-mail address you have associated with your PayPal account is half of the equation for scammers... Since they can get your e-mail address, all they need after that is the password. They send out the scam e-mails to make you enter your password, then they login to your PayPal and send money to their PayPal and eventually pocket the money.

It has been posted several times but I will say it again: NEVER open a LINK from an e-mail and sign in. It could be a scam. If it happens to you or has happened in the past and you did not notice because your PayPal account is at $0 anyway, I recommend that you change your password. They might be waiting for you to put money in there. Heck, just change your password anyway. Protect yourself.

Ebay is a great way to buy and sell, but you do need to educate yourself. They have pages and pages of tutorial materials on protecting your account and how to make transactions safely. I have bought and sold 4 cues and maybe 20 other various items and had no problems.
