Big Apple

Is Corey playing in this tournament, because I didnt see his name in the brackets but I thought he was playing in it.

Corey is not playing. This is a non points tournament and with a hotel room at about $200 plus a night, plus parking and food, Corey said he would have to come in the top 3 just to break even.

The hotel money is the major Expense for this trip. I am lucky that I have got family close by to stay with, dont think I would be here otherwise my self.
I have just got back from the venue and about to post some of the scores on my site.
www.tonycrosby.com
Az has got the full brackets posted.

efren smacked strickland. earl was losing control of the cb early and hooked himself a few times. missed a shot he shouldn't have. after about the 7th or 8th game, earl lost interest. it was an uneventful match.

what's with engert's hairdo???!!!

i think this tourney is losing vitality, and if efren and busta weren't here, it would turn flat. owen, strickland, and engert don't make up for no deuel, mika, taiwanese, morris, or pagulayan. noticeably absent are eberle and williams.

Matches

Would have loved to have seen Danny and Neils play (10-9).

Also would have like to have watched Gabe and Django play.
Anyone else notice that Gabe is doing better and better in
the big tournaments?

Wish I could see Engert and Efren play too...

Damn, me too. I'm stuck at work today. But I'll get to see who's left standing tomorrow.

Sounds like a better hotel deal is in order to help out the field. Can't believe they're getting $200 a night across the street -- in Nowheresville, Queens. Anybody could do better with expedia, but probably not much better than $150. :(

Actually, the hotel across the street from the venue site, Masters, is La Quinta Inn. The pool player's rate was $119 plus tax, which is a good rate for New York City, but for a pool player on the road in these times, it is still brutally high for a multiple-day event.

Two Big Apples ago, there was a hotel up the street about 3 miles called International something or another. The pool player's rate was $159 plus tax. I did not like walking barefoot in the hotel room because the carpet was moist and the room had a musty odor like dirty clothes.

NYC is expensive for lodging. If you know somebody who lives there, it would be great to stay with friends when attending pool tournaments. A 4-day tournament in New York City expenses are: entry fee, travel costs consisting of either gas/tolls or airplane ticket, $650 to $800 for hotel, and a per diem of $50 to $200 depending on if you drink alcohol. A beer at Masters 2 years ago cost $4.50 plus tip.

To attend a tournament in New York City, the expenditures range from $1,150 to $2,050.

With a $15,000-added event, you got a shot at winning a nice chunk of change, but depending on whether you flew in by plane and what your daily per diem may be, you must come in third place or better to break even. JMHO, FWIW!

Which is why only 69 players showed up for a $15,000 added event, and how many of them are from New York or close to New York?

By Taiwanese, I imagine you mean Yang, who played in 2003. Also absent to my disappointment are finalist Jeremy Jones, Hohmann, and Chalie Bryant all of whom made a good showing last year.

Sorry... some typos are too funny to ignore.

BTW, Jeremy and Charlie are in Mobile, and Thorsten is in Germany.

I watched Gabe vs. Busta very closely. BY FAR, the best match I've seen yesterday. Gabe really caught a stroke in the last 6 racks when Django started coming up dry on the break. Before that, it was neck and neck.

Gabe is fast becoming one of my favorite players to see play. He smacks of JJ in more ways than one, but his style is a bit more fluid. I mean, this guy's patterns bring tears to my eyes in their intelligence and simplicity. Gabe won't just slam balls in the hole!

Also, the minimal cueball movement, his use of the side pockets and two-way shots are absolutely beautiful...

Souquet vs. Parica was also a pretty good match. Even though Souquet never lost control over the match, Parica is a fighter, and made him earn it.

Strickland just got totally shut down by Efren. It's hard for me to understand how ANYONE can shut down a guy with a stroke like Strickland's  . I'm still trying to figure it out...

Tony R got eliminated, which broke my heart. I spoke to him earlier and he said his match with Alaska (a well-known local) was the worst he's played in three years. You gotta be happy for Joey K, though. Kid is playing lights out. Went to the hill with Tony and showed heart through the end, when Tony scratched on a two-way bank on the five ball.

Still, Tony pulled out this positional gem in the rack before last... 6 railer to the short side of the 6!

(The 5 went in the lower right hand corner pocket)

I meant, Taiwanese, of course. Now you embarassed me... like someone just pointed out my fly had been open for the past half hour... Which actually happened to Efren when he was playing Strickland in front of the cameras!

What time ...

Does Gabe and Danny play? And Engert and Efren?

I couldn't help but notice the prior comments on Gabe.
As you watch him more and more, you will start to notice
the excellent finesse he has on the table, and the way
he plays his ball patterns....

What's going on?

Anyone have a update about the Big Apple? I am thinking of going to the evening session (depending upon the matches)

,,,and FPC, who won the mohican sun tourney. there was just something very cool and exciting about foreign players bringing an entourage, as the taiwanese did two years ago.

i don't need to pay hard cash to watch local players i can see for free. big apple's saving grace is that it's near the mohican sun.

btw,,,the friday night session at 9pm was loaded with talent(sans those i mentioned:(:(:( ), and the crowd was woefully thin. three bleachers full and the bleachers were small. the other bleachers were almost empty. and no vendors,,,,were there vendors in the past, lewdo? all the names hand written in red felt marker. xeroxed makeshift flyers. do these people know what a computer/printer is???

man,,,,,this tourney will tank for lack of players, lack of attendance, and poor planning.

Just returned from the Big Apple, where my tournament dreams were cruelly ended by Tony Crosby, lol. It was not a great match, but I must say that it really was a pleasure playing with him. He's a stand-up guy, and I was glad to finally get the chance to meet him. He also made a great comeback in his next match against Jason Cruz, where he was down 4-0, to win 10-8. By the way, for anyone that hasn't seen Tony play yet, he's one of those guys that makes the game look reeeeeally easy. ;)

I must say that the prize money was a huge disappointment. There were 68 players I think, and 13th through 16th only got your money back. So basically it was a $15,000 added tournament with 64 players that only paid 12 players. Running tournaments like this is simply not sustainable. I live 15 minutes from the venue, and when all was said and done, I spent $400 on this tournament. Having to come in the top 12 of a tournament with this talent, just to break even, is tough action.

The women have to win one match to get their entry back. We're doing something seriously wrong on the promotion end of things. This was a 68 player tournament with a $30,000 prize pool, and only 12 players really got paid. I know I am repeating myself, but really, something is very wrong.

Maybe I'm just bitter because I played two matches where I did not miss a pocketable ball, lol, and I came away with nothing. Yeah, that's probably it ;).

.....and there you have a player's perspective of things. just NOT a good situation. the old way of doing things won't work,,,especially in nyc. this tourney is being handled like a run-of-the-mill local tourney. how did they ever get strickland to come????????? is the summit, like, next week or something?

hopefully the summit will be better,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,once they change that pretentious title.

bruin70, like you I've been long wishing to see FPC & Co. make some sort of invasion a la Parica & Co. in U.S. tours. BUT, for reasons that have already been discussed to exhaustion, it's tough to believe it would happen.

It's hard for me to think of the Big Apple 9 Ball in the terms you described because, obviously, I have a bias in favor of it since it's in my backyard. There were no vendors last year either. Steve Lipsky's post, I think, summarizes everything, and it's the reason why Corey Deuel and others aren't part of the field. I couldn't add anything, except to say that I'll enjoy the heck out of it for as long as it stands. Actually, I'm on my way to Master right now to catch the 7pm session. ;)

That sucks, I looked at last years payouts when I decided to play in this event and saw that (I think) they padi $500 as a minimum, I assumed they would pay a 1/4 of the field and this is what 13-16 would get? Getting your money back seems a little harsh to say the least.

BTW
I lost to Steve in my second match 10-5, I played pretty well but scratched twice on easy run outs which was the difference between 7-5 dowon and 7-5 up. Steve didn't miss much and deserved to win.

In my first match I lost to Baservich 10-7 in a 2 1/2 hour marathon which ran over into the next session. I missed a couple of balls to go 8:7 down with my break next and at 9:7 he sank the 9 on the break :-(

Breaking from the box though was an experience as I didn't know what it was until the players meeting. My break really sucked against Danny B which was a real handicap but after the match Danny showed me something which really helped my break, as every says Danny really is a nice guy. Unfortunately even though my break worked great against Steve L a combination of Steve's solid play and my errors cost me.

Of all the tournaments I've been to in the last 8 months this has been the toughest mainly because of accomodation headaches (sleeping on a floor for 8 days sucks!) and the quality of the field (it may not be large but it does contain a lot of quality players). Timing is critical though and if it wasn't sandwhihced between tournys like th challenge of champions and the joss finals from what has been said I think it would struggle to draw much of an international field at all.

So FINALLY fly home on Monday, hopefully be back for WS and US Open.

PS
Good luck Tony and please keep us posted on the results
