Big Apple Challenge winding down

The tournament is coming to an end here in hot NYC. Tony Crosby with big wins under his belt today 5 matches total, with wins over Alan Rolon, Jason Cruz, Earl Strickland, and Rob Saez. Must be a long day for the players today, as many of them began their matches at 11am and are still playing. The scores are still being updated my Tony Crosby's wife at www.tonycrosby.com as well as a photo gallery has been put up. Congrats to Tony Crosby on a great tournament and hope he keeps it up for the US open, this is one pool player on the up and coming..

Mobile has a very strong field this weekend. I was actually expecting the Tiger Planet Pool tourney to be fairly slow due to the tourney in NYC but it seems quite a few people opted not to spend upwards of $200 a night for a hotel room.

was the tournament coordinator able to procure special rates for the players at the hotel?

If the world cannot afford New York, for how much longer will New York be able to afford itself? Or, rather, how much more credit card debt will New York accrue to pay itself until an unpayable credit card bill hits the mail?

Yes. The TD did procure a pool player's rate of $116 plus tax for La Quinta Inn, which is located across the street (Queens Boulevard West) from Masters Billiards (the venue site).

The two previous years, the hotel rate for pool players participating in the Big Apple tourney was $159 plus tax at the International Inn located about 3 miles up Queens Boulevard West.

NYC is an ideal location since there are so many pool enthusiasts and players in the New England region, but everything in the NYC seems to be more expensive than other pool venues. I would presume it is the same in most large cities. I know here in D.C., there is no way you could get a hotel room for less than 100 bucks, unless you were staying in a flop house. :p

To attend a 4-day tournament in NYC, though, it costs in the neighborhood of $1,150 to $2,050, depending on whether you flew in by plane and the per diem, i.e., food and other expenses.

Does that sound reasonable, or more importantly, sustainable? New York's economy seems to be ready to implode unto itself. And before retail, real estate, or finance, goes pool.

BTW, I'm going out on a limb to say Niels gets the cheese.

These expenses are the norm for tournaments held in large cities, I think. With pool payouts being what they are -- the exact same as 30 years ago -- and the cost of living quadrupling, it is a financial burden on many a pool player. You're stuck $1,150 to $2,050 before you hit the first ball in New York City and must come in third place or better to break even.
