Big table or lil table for giving up weight ?

My old road partner Gary A told me that Chris Bartram offered him the 8 & they were going back n forth on which table it was going to be on & Chris said that he'd rather give it on the lil table as he didn't think it would show up as much on a little table as it would on the 9 footer..maybe Chris could weigh in his thoughts on this also but personally I would think the weight would show up more on the small track..more 8's on break & more combo's....What do some of ya'll think on where ya'll would rather give weight....Big Table or small ?

A poll might be good for this question.

My opinion is the small table because of congestion.
The stronger safety player should win.

On the big table, a good break will produce better layouts.
On the small table, even a good break will probably have clusters to deal with.

Would rather give it up on the small table....on a shorty, I expect to lose if I miss a shot.....I also expect to run out if someone misses...

On bigger tables, I have a better chance of a stronger player missing a leave or hanging one in the pocket....also, I have been known to miss a makeable shot every now and then

Good points !

I just think if it's 2 good players that can play on either...that the 8 would show up more on the smaller table...the guy with 8 will make more 8 on breaks & have more carom & como opportunities on the smaller table...I should have done it as a poll..sorry wasn't thinking & havn't posted all that many times...I've had this conversation with several top notch players & had various opinions.

Depends on the players, the game, and the type of tables...

In your example, Gary and Chris are both run-out players on a bar table and giving up the 8 in this situation is not alot of weight. Gary has the ability on the smaller table to get out to the 9 just as easy. However, take this match up to a bigger table and giving Gary the 8 is a much larger spot as both players have the potential to miss more frequently, causing the 8 to come into play more often.

My personal preference, if giving weight at 9 Ball, I would rather play on a 9-ft table with tighter pockets. Most barbox tables in my area have much larger pockets, making it easier for a lesser player to break well and run out.

Giving Up Weight

Its harder to run out on a 9' table and therefore the weaker player will get more shots. When getting weight the more opportunities you have the better chance you will have to win. The weaker player also wants to play on a tighter pocket table, again this will give him more opportunities to win.

.....Took the words right off the end of my pool stick!

Thanks for the inpute !

I would still love to hear from some of the top players that play well on both in order to weigh the pro's & cons.

It's all about the break !

My personal opinion is it's still about the break...If the player giving the 8 is breaking good he is able to control the table or run out making the weight not to be a factor..flipside is the player getting the 8..if hisbreak is working good...he'll have more money balls on the snap, more runouts, and more carom & combo's available..So in my opinion the battle with 2 good players will be won or loss with the break !
