Bill McDaniel's cues??

I was wondering about his cues. Not much is being said about his cues anywhere. Don't really know much about him other than he worked with Tim Scrugg's for awhile before he set up his own shop.

probably because, for some reason, his cues are not "investment grade". i don't know but his work has been it that grey area for a long time.

Not sure how accurate this is....I believe at one point in time he had an financial interest in the Scruggs shop (mid-late 90s). I'm pretty certain that Bill was building cues before Tim left Joss. We haven't heard from Bill in ahwile. Hope he's doing alright.

Bill builds one hell of a cue and gets my vote for the most underappreciated cuemaker today. Part of the "gray area" that bruin is referring to is how he has stuck to a limited line of cues for many years. Many think it has clouded his image as a "custom" cuemaker.

I noticed he had a catolog of cues. Im perty sure he did at one time. I personally dont like when cuemakers make certain style of cues for cue dealers. I will say the ones that i have hit with were well constructed,.......... alothough not perfect. if i wanted a good playing cue i would not be affraid to buy one .............for that purpose.

McDaniel Cues

Yes, he is the most underappreciated cuemaker in the world by most collectors, and this does not make sense to me. His designs are some of the most eyecatching of any cuemaker. He can make anything you ask and he always delivers perfection. Plus, players have always held his cues in high opinion. For example: Nick Varner, George San Souci, Karen Corr, Santos Sambajon, Rodney Morris, Julie Kelly, Ismael Paez, Jose Parica, Ray Schultz, and Alex Pagulayan have all played with Bill's cues at one time or another because of the "hit." IMHO someday when the smoke clears, people are going to look back and say he was definately one of the best cuemakers of his time, because of their playablity and intricate design work.

I don't know why that people say that Bill only builds catalog models. In fact, I can call him right now and I am willing to bet that he will build you whatever you want. He is very flexible and great to deal with. The simple fact is, Bill has not received alot of the recognition that others have received because he has never pushed for unreasonable prices. He has always been more than reasonable with everything he has produced. However, a price increase of more than 25% has hit recently. So if you have a McDaniel hang on to it. You won't be buying any more at "cheap" prices.

Bill McDaniel

I concur, well said Anthony!!! Bill's cues will out hit any other cue that I have ever played with. Bill also has the "nuts" on that steel joint of his. That thing plays just like ivory. No one else has even come close to that type of a hit.

I wouldnt trade any of my McDaniels for a Mottey, White, or Cognoscenti. Bill is a perfectionist and does damn good work.

I agree, he is perhaps the best cuemaker of this time period.

McDaniel Rocks!!!

Wow guys! I agree too. Bill's cues are da bomb!!! You haven't played unless you have tried a McDaniel (especiall one with a steel joint).

I too think that his cues will gain respect in the near future. He certainly deserves it. I too think that he makes the best looking/hitting cue on the market today.

in today's market when you become a cue maker you must look to bring something "new" to the table. bill makes a great cue but i think most of his type work has been done by many other makers before him. jim white does traditional work also and has taken much from paul mottey but allot of his cues are new spins on old ideas and that alone helps separate him from others and makes his cues very desirable. bill will always have my respect for his work but some buyers want something that is not part of the "saturated" market. i've always believed that once a cuemaker has "found" the way to make the "hit" of the cue he must then find the unique "look" to entice people to buy. this is not an easy task as so many buyers are at odds on what they like. this is in no way takes away from the work that bill does it's just my spin to the poster of this thread. :)

I agree with Anthony Beeler, and then some. Mr. Bill Mcdaniel is a master cue maker, from Jackson TN. Mr. Mcdaniel (Bill) has been making custom pool cues since the early 1970's. "Mcdaniel Custom Pool Cues" are considered not only to be some of the finest made, and most beautiful cues ever made, they are by far (in my opinion) best playing pool cues in today's custom cue market. As Bill says it has to play better than it looks, and his cues are beautiful. He does some of the most detailed work being done on cues in today market, and they are as near perfect as human can make them! Many past, and present champions have played with a Bill Mcdaniel Custom Cue. I have owned over 30+ of Bill Mcdaniel Custom Cues from $500.00 to $6500.00. Bill has never really promoted himself, he does not go to many trade shows and such. If you called Bill tomorrow and had an idea or design for a cue. He can and would work with you, or anyone to make exactly what a customer would want in a cue. Bill has always bent over backwards to help me with my cues, and he really cares about his customers. MR. MCDANIEL CUES, AS TIME PASSES WILL BE RATED UP WITH SOME OF THE GREAT CUES EVER. BOTH FOR PLAYABLITY AND FOR THE CRAFTSMANSHIP. HE TO WILL BE RATED AS ONE OF THE GREAT CUE MAKERS!! NO DOUBT!

I have had a few of his cues, the quality and attention to detail in every one was top notch and they all played very well. What I remember most about his cues is that he makes the best playing steel jointed cues out there (in my opinion). I have absolutely hated every other steel jointed cue I ever owned, but for whatever reason his simply hit better.

I'm not really sure why his cues don't bring the money that some others do. If I had to guess, it would be because of how his cues are marketed and sold as opposed to their quality and worksmanship.

> I've never bought a cue from him,but have known him fairly well for over 10 years. I never felt right asking him directly about it,but I concur with Bill being involved with Tim's shop in some capacity. For those of you that have never been to his shop,if you ever decide to go make SURE you call first, only rarely does anyone ever open the door for a stranger or someone unexpected. The shop is very stealthy, meaning you'll wind up going to either the Airways Motel or the gas station next door looking for it,there is no sign oddly enough,or at least there wasn't until recently. I went there to pick up a couple shafts he made for a friend's Meucci, and saw probably 15 cues that Bill had some hand in making, that were in the Scruggs catalog with the light blue background. I've seen cues that looked like 80's vintage Joss East stuff, that he did while developing his touch on the pantograph, before his massive Techno-Isel. Since that time, his work has become amazing. He can make you a steel jointed cue that is tapered exactly like a SW,Cog,or anything else, and vice versa, unlimited shaft tapers, nitpicky stuff, whatever you want. In general,a really good guy,but like everyone else has idiosyncrasies. Tommy D.

Bill will make a truly custom cue, it just takes time and money. I have several of his cues one of which is a one of a kind ebony/ivory/silver cue which i had a lot of input into the design. I have had several cues over the years by several highly regarded cuemakers and found that some are just artists and not technicians and others are technicians and not artists and a few are both. I think Bill is both but in any case i the technicians come first. Cues are for playing pool not hanging on a wall or in a display case. The only two cues I have that rival Bill in playability are my Gus Szamboti and Joss West. By the way the Joss West is from the early eighties and I have a copy of the catalog/brochure Stroud was using at the time.

I guess you could go to
http://www.billmcdaniel.com/

I used to own his QJ6 model. The hit reminded me of an old joss I used to have, but it was much prettier. I really liked the litttle bone shaped rings.
I had a hell of a time selling it though!! It was in great shape and had a matching Predator shaft and I could only get $500.00 for it!!!!
