Billiard Books Questions/Reviews/Recommendations

Number one question from me is has anyone read or used "The Pro Book" by Bob Henning. I was kind of intriuged by this quote from the book description, " Improve your ability to play using 130 reference shots, keyed into your memory with 16 primary shots." There aren't too many reviews out on this product yet and would really like to know if it's worth the cover price.

I've bought quite a few books on pool in the last couple of years, Byrnes New Standard Book of Pool and Billiards, Byrnes Advanced Techniuqe in Pool and Billiards. Essential Pool by Arthur Cranfield and Laurence Moy. Steve Mizerak's Complete Book of Pool, and A Smarter Way to Learn Pool by George Fels. I think I learned a little something from each one but more than anything these books have just whet my appetite for more. What books, videos, etc would some of you recommend?

Out of the books I've listed I really liked a couple of items mentioned in Essential Pool, mainly the way in which tangent lines were explained, and the Byrnes books have a ton of good information.

I'd be interested in fiction recommendations as well but again my number one question is, has anyone read The Pro Book, and what did you think? Thanks.

Precision Pool

I just received Precision Pool as a gift for my birthday, and although I have not read the whole book through, I like many of the Pattern plays, break shots, ball control, and match strategies covered.

I'll post an entire review once I have read the whole book.

books, videos

I just picked up a Smarter way and Essential Pool, but haven't read them yet. I'm now reading Play your best straight pool by Capelle and it's very good. I also got the Straight Pool Bible by Moy and Cranfield that I haven't read yet. Precison Pool is pretty Good.Ray Martin's 99 shots, Pleasures of Small Motions, Books by George Fels. Videos : Kinister's 60 Minute Workout, Rempe How to run a rack, How to run 100 Balls.

I wish.

I've got a 45 minute train ride each way and I like to read something, but since i don't have a table on the train, I can't practice as I read, so maybe a lot of it doesn't sink all the way in.

When I get home, I have other drills I do, and practice for 8 ball league and straight, so I don't always get to practice the nes stuff. Yet! Dennis

I've read the byrnes books and I thought they were very good, They have a lot of info in them that you cant find in other books too.

I've read Byrne's first book. However, I've been thru Bob Henning's book entitled THE PRO BOOK and it's the one I strongly recommend the most since his exercises are graduated - once you take a look at his practice instructions for the various types of shots you'll know what I mean.

Mr. Henning's book along with a Talisman tip are the best investments that you can make for your game. I'm about ready to write Mr. Henning a very complimentary letter about his book. It relates. Iff your ready to elevate your game several steps. He did it right. And forget Capelle's book. It's for club players.

What's a club player? I thought Capelle's play your best straight pool was pretty good, but then I don't think I'm even a "club Player".

I look forward to checking out the Henning book. Dennis

I don't know but there is something about that orange and yellow cover...
....almost....mesmerizing...it's calling to me...buyyyy meeeeeee, buuuyy meee.

I haven't read it yet either. I used to work at Barnes and Noble in Seattle and they had a decent pool section so i read all of the books in the store on my lunch break.

Dammit. Get it. The Pro book is all you need. Geometrically, biomechanically and sprirtually. The greatest investment in your game that you could ever make.

Don't know about The Pro Book. One of my favorite books is Black Belt Billiards. It's a book of stroke, shot, and position drills.

I found Byrne's Standard and Capelle's Play Your Best Pool to be the most thorough with all the basics. Capelle goes into a little more detail, but that might be because he didn't split his book between pool and 3-cushion billiards...(?). But I'd say they're both very good books, no doubt about it. Capelle's Play Your Best Straight Pool is a must for anyone that really loves that particular game. Fels Advanced Pool is also good, although it's mostly on Straight Pool. A Mind for Pool (another by Capelle) is a great book on the mental aspect to the game...
Byrne's Advanced Technique isn't a must-have, but if you like details, and lots of inside information on the game, you might want to check it out.

I believe I benefited from The Pro Book as well as Blackbelt Billiards, Byrnes books (more informational than instructional).

Joe Tucker has a little book called Guaranteed Improvement which is very good...all drills.

Another very good informational book is The Science of Pocket Billiards by Jack Koehler.

The 99 Critical Shots in Pool by Ray Martin is excellent and highly recommended by all.

There are a lot of excellent pool instruction books. I have enjoyed and benefitted from many.
