Billiard cue question

I have a Helmstetter billiard cue with a wood screw joint. I like how the cue plays but billiard cues do not have a pro taper on the shaft. I only play pool and never play billiards. I was wondering if it would be smart to have the shaft turned down and put a pro taper on it or am I just gonna ruin it? Thanks in advance!
 
You would be fine, but resale would suffer if you ever wanted to sell it. Maybe find a cuemaker that can make a pool shaft for your cue that would be a little longer in length since most billiard cues are around 56.5" and pool cues are 58".

But if you have no intention of selling it and you like the current length, go for it.

you could also buy a pool shaft to fit it
i wouldnt tamper with the billiard shaft
 
Don't do that to a freaking helmsetter if it's an original shaft, please

You can buy a new shaft with whatever taper you want

molinari, longoni etc

Don't do it. Have a shaft made. There's no guarantee you'll like the outcome.

I had 2 shafts to my It's George I had one shaft turned down to a taper I liked and used as my playing shaft. Years later I look back and think I would have been better off just keeping the original taper.
 
Play with it the way it is if you like it.


If you want to try a pool shaft on it then buy a pool shaft for it. There are aftermarket shafts in numerous tapers to fit that cue.

pro taper is not for everyone

Shorter, fatter, stiffer. A billiard cue is essentially much like an old school pool cue.
