Awesome shot. Do you guys think he was trying to play safe and accidentally make the ball?

Do you think he was actually trying to make the ball?

Or do you think he was playing a two-way shot trying to make the ball and he knew that if he missed it would be safe? Even the commentators discuss it.

I would guess 2 way shot. If he wanted to play safe, there were easier opportunities by hitting the other side of the ball and bringing the cueball up to the 8.

I think he went for it and played smart pace for a safe if he missed. A 1.5-way shot maybe, but his goal was the pocket.

Obviously this is 2 way shot. No brainer. The natural trajectory of the CB after potting OB allows a safe also. Guys like this wily fox Luat commonly play 2 way shots.
And I am shocked that this shot is Billiard Digest stroke of genius. No offence to Luat but there are better shots than this:D

A common thin cut shot. Why those people in the audience hooted an hollered over that, is beyond me. Make the shot and shape is natural. We do those all the time playing One Pocket.

Oh come on people that was a great shot. 85 degrees, jacked up over the nine. Did you notice that he moved the 9-ball with his stick when he stroked? Foul!

He went for the shot 100%...perfect speed to get in line for the 8-9 finish. "Still no smile from Luat..." no kidding, because indeed he raked the 9 and fouled, probably waiting for someone to call it...

He went all out for that one

I agree, he played it. A safety from there would have involved an overcut. An overcut was nearly impossible and an undercut could have easily left the six hanging out too far. What made the shot amazing was he spun the ball in from a jacked up position - that's some talent.

His only other really viable option would have been to cross bank the six back up to the center of the table, leaving his opponent an easy hook safe on the 9. The safety the commentators were talking about was really a long shot.

Nothing against him, but the only real question is what was all the amazement about for this challenging but perfectly safe and obvious shot?

The safety is automatic (no spin needed) with any cut that comes near the pocket, and if the shot goes he wins the game. Maybe he tried to err a little on the thick side to ensure a hit, but otherwise there's no question he went for the shot and the two-way and the out.
