Billy Thorpe gone wild!

Do you feel lucky?

This was an after hours money match. The stories of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Michael Jordan gambling on the golf course and their actions had zero effect on their professional status. The fact the Michael Jordan is a huge racist is always overlooked.

To say that players need to police themselves is pants on head stupid. The tournament directors that allowed Earl to start this behavior and have it feed down are the ones to blame. Not the players. Unscrupulous people in charge being afraid to enforce rules has become pathetic.

The actions of Tiger, Phil and Michael in money games was all a matter of innuendo and never shown live on the internet or anywhere else for that matter. Big difference to what we saw here.

One other thing. I'm tired of hearing about the all the TD's that let Earl get away with murder. That's bullshit! I can tell you that he never got away with anything when I was directing tournaments he played in. I penalized him games and even forfeited him once for bad behavior, and Earl got the message after awhile and was always on his best behavior around me after that.

Look for his match with Landon Shuffett in the BigFoot Ten Ball on youtube. He started on Landon early in the match, talking when he was shooting. I sat down and babysat Earl for the rest of the match! I told him he could talk while he was at the table but not while Landon was shooting. He basically STFU after that and Landon laid a bomb on him, something like 15-3.

Baloney. Ever heard of Alex Higgins? He was a national hero, and they made a movie about him.
Yes, he even bit a referee on the lip (ON THE LIP!) during a major tournament. Got banned for a long time for it, too. Bad boy snooker players got marketed as such, but there are limits...

It doesn't really matter where you are from, how many brothers you have, whether you are a red neck, or just plain dirt road trash, etc., we all have the ability to rise above our circumstances.

If you have had the opportunity to learn pool in a real pool hall then presumably you also were exposed to the concepts of pool etiquette and rudimentary sportsmanship. I think that we owe it to ourselves, our opponents, and our sport to park all bad behavior in our chair when we step up to the table to play. Self control, if practiced often, is no more difficult to summon and employ than basic pool strategy. Personally, I feel that proper behavior will also improve one's game because it removes a tremendous amount of negative karma which interferes with the proper mindset for playing pool. (My wife just told me this concept would work in marriages, too, and I suggested that she try it some time.)

If behavior is related to substance abuse, there is a proven solution for most as AA and NA have lifted incredible burdens from many persons with such issues.

That is one of the functions forums are for.
When Lee Brett had a fight with Darren Appleton, he was hurt and astounded that AZ was talking about it..
....I told him to get a V-grip on himself.
Amazing how folks condemn American pool players for fighting, yet the antics of the Boxing Brits are soon forgotten. ;)

Exactly... That's why I wish the snooker / chinese 8 ball comparisons would stop. That type of game / crowd doesn't exist over here.
Maybe this is part of the problem. I don't think the "rowdy American" image is serving our sport very well.

...I think once you stop thinking American pool can be like snooker/chinese 8ball, and just embrace the way you guys do things, it could be successful. That really doesn't change the black eye a brawl may put on the game for a short while, but it may more 'meh' rather than doom and gloom.

I have no clue what hopes Matchroom has for your market. If they want it to emulate snooker/Chn 8ball, I don't think it will work out for them.

According to the internets the greater Dayton area has 800,000. Kind of like St Louis has 300,000. Metro area has 2.8 million.
I'm thinking that 800k count includes the Cincinnati area.
No, the Dayton and Cincinnati metropolitan statistical areas are separate entities. The former has about 800,000 people, the latter about 2.1 million.

Thanks for getting the numbers right as always.

Just because the exploits of those gamblers wasn’t caught on film makes it so it didn’t happen? You’re retarded. If you have to babysit Earl for him to not go off the rails, that’s a failure too. Don’t try and justify failures, it makes you look like that much more of an ass.

Ah got it... It's TD's failure that pool is in the state that it's in because they let Earl do whatever he wanted, and it's also a TD's failure to put effort forth in trying to prevent Earl from doing whatever he wanted.

Makes sense... Might as well end the thread now.

What is up with being so antagonistic? No need for ad hominem attacks. If you don't like Jay's views, fine, but no need for name calling. I've met him in person several times and can say with full confidence that he is an upstanding, nice, and friendly person.

He claimed he was giving him shit racks drunk and down $1,400 so take that for what its worth.

If I'm playing $200 a game I'm not taking a shit rack from anybody.

If Billy was accepting shit racks its on him period.
Funny , you know if Billy was up $1,000 with shitty racks ...he wouldn't care.

You are right, he should just calmly refuse the racks or refuse to play.

Yeah, it’s not a good situation for a TD to be in having to deal with Earl. The bottom line is many spectators come to see him play, so for the sake of the promoters, it’s not that simple to DQ him for his misbehavior, without upsetting a lot of people.

Yes, it is a precedent that should have been set with Earl and others many years ago and sounds like Jay tried his best to, but others (possibly Scott Smith) may have put up with a lot more misbehavior from Earl than they should have.
