BillyBob bashing

I know some of you take a lot of pleasure at bashing Mr. Billybob.
I would just like to point out that he seems to be a person with a passion for pool, like the rest of us.

Although some of his posts on strategy may not be up to the standards of some people here, he is eager to share and I don't think he should be ridiculed for it. After all, this is a forum for talking about pool.

I've never once seen him take a jab at any of you. No matter what you think of a persons opinion, it doesn't give you licence to belittle a person.

Give constructive criticism where it's needed, but please keep other peoples feelings in mind when you're posting.

Agreed, he wasn't claiming to be a champion, just telling a story of an enjoyable experience.

He is getting onto the track of thinking about deeper strategical options and that is an exciting stage of pool development, as it begins to put a player into a category above the bangers.

Actually I was just about to post the following. I have a thick skin and it is getting thicker (allows me to tolerate sharking better too).

And I *know* some things I post are controversial and I will get an ear full, however I learn from what people have to say, so I'm OK with all the responses negative or positive.

Anyway what I was about to say is this...

Getting the most out of this forum - learning new stuff

If you are open and can discuss things you have done in certain game situations on this forum, you will get *tons* of excellent advice.

The responses here can be "brutal", but I'll say it is the same advice I get from a couple of very good players I practice with. They will see me about to shoot a shot, stop me, and say "Why are you doing that? That is dumb. This is a better way to do it", etc.

So if you can take the heat, post a game you have played, diagram it and let others comment on it.

I think it's appropriate to mention that billybobs threads tend to get people posting and a lot of positive things come out of them from other members because of that.

I was just thinking this. It seems as though APA7 is here for the sole purpose of bashing billy bob. Kinda juvinile in my opinion.

In his last two threads he was talking about playing d players. I think the tactics he was using were inventive considering the competition. Different strategies for different players. For example playing chess against a D player and lower, I play very aggressive push forward quickly, sacrifice pieces in key spots and force the mistake. However against a better player, A and above, I would be a little more cautious. Not to say that I'm not aggressive, just that you have to be a little more a little more creative to force mistakes out of A players and experts and above.

For the most part I saw people giving constructive criticism. But there were some attacks that I was not impressed with. This isn't high school guys, stop it!

Tap. Tap. He's learning. Almost nobody starts out as a champion. They get better by shooting straighter and learning new moves. Billybob recently tried two new moves and posted about them. Along with a lot of sarcasm, he got some good feedback about those moves. Now he knows as much about the pros and cons of his moves as if he had had to play them in actual games a dozen times or so. He's using AZB to learn faster. What's wrong with that? And the discussion that ensues about the better moves is interesting to other people here (Mike Page, and Jude R., for example). Nothing wrong with that, either.

HANG IN.....conflict and esp. divergance of opinion can nurture incredible growth whereas bobbing head "yesmen" often leads to stagnation:)

Couple of things here.. While I'm a relative newbie here, I'm the resident post whore on a couple other boards (non pool related). It's the internet, that in itself (unfortunately) does give people license to belittle people. I've been pleasantly surprised to see not a whole lot of "flaming" here on this board, but rest assured as the board grows it will begin, and eventually turn into a "shark tank" just like every other message board on the net. I'm not asking you to take my word for it as a pool player, but as a guy that has literally started, run, and moderated several message boards. Sometimes Admin's can do somethings to give the board a more mellow vibe, and they can lay down some guidelines to stick by, but ultimately the content of the board is up to the users, the admin's at best can only prune the tree (pun for the admin's if there reading) so to speak.

The biatch of some of that stuff is though, accountabillity sometimes does come into play. There was an actual fist fight that developed out of things that were written on another board.. And from what I read here, I guess it happened here as well. (Someone went to a tourny and popped one of the players? Becuase I guess the player was a ***** on the internet?)

That falls into one of those open mouth insert keyboard kinda deals.. LOL I try to make it a practice to not say something on a board unless I'd say it to the person standing right in front of me.

BillyBob is an excellent poster on this forum, often producing thought-provoking posts and threads. Look forward to more of the same.

I get a totally different impression from BillyBob. He is either a troll, or he really isn't interested in getting better at pool. He only cares about winning. This became evident when he made a thread about him having 'success' riding the 9-ball every shot, and continued to argue that it's better than trying to run out. LOL. He also gives terrible advice, and doesn't take into account that some other beginner players might think he isn't a beginner (which he is) and heed his advice, which might cause them some frustration and pain in the learning process of the game later on.

I would like to see fast larry and billy-bob, in a shoot out, whos your money on??? I going to bet on the dog

I think you're right in so much as Billy_Bob wants to win. (I wonder if he just wants to get better. "Mr. Freud? Where are you?") I also think that he can be crass and rub people the wrong way. But I think his heart is in the right place. I like that I can take his "advice" or leave it. I like that he causes a stir. I like it that although he comes close, he is never rude or offensive. I don't find him a Troll. (You'll have to prove me wrong on that.)

I'm a beginner. I'm 49 years old and started to play 6 months ago. Maybe my life experience protects me against taking advice without due process more so than a 20-year-old. I like it when the pot gets stirred - as long as it's civil and everyone respects each others opinions.

I certainly do not agree with everything that Billy_Bob says or promotes in his messages, but do not see anything there objectionable.

We all have our own opinions on how the game should be played and what is best for one is not necessarily best for others.

If anyone tried to take every piece of advice on this forum as gospel, there are so many conflicting opinions on every subject that you would go crazy.

Each of us must do our best to separate the wheat from the chaff and try new ideas as presented.

Keep posting Billy_Bob and forget the nay sayers.

I am jealous of BillyBob. He's in the steepest part of the learning curve and that's where, for me, the most fun is.

If he continues his journey, he'll approach the flatter top AND KEEP GOING UP FOREVER. That is a good thing, imho.

I'm wondering, what happens after you get to be an APA 7? What growth will there be after that? Or is that the top of that world?
