Black Boar Cues

I just got off the phone with Tony... the first time I have spoken to him. I wanted to know some details about the cue I own.

He was a very nice guy and quick to answer my questions. I was actually quite nervous to speak to him... not sure why....

Regarding my cue: When I took off the bumper, I found that the weight screw was center punched with two marks instead of engraved with a number. He said that the punch marks indicate the weight of the bolt and that only the early cues have the engraved numbers, since some people wanted to change the weight of the cues and the numbers were too tough to keep up with.

He also told me that none of the old school cues had ivory veneers (as I had assumed). He said they are phenolic veneers.

So that's what I know!

I believe Tim Scruggs collaborated with them at one point in time and he may be able to fill in some of the blanks. You could give him a call and ask a few questions.

Big Mac!

Thanks for the advice! I think I know what I needed to know for right now. Actually, my BB (old school AS-8, as you know) is in such great shape that I was halfway suspecting that it was a copy. Tony laughed when I said that and said that there aren't any BB fakes out there. I was concerned because it did not have a number on the bolt, but he told me not to worry.

Also: I would like to repay you for your kindness in sending me the BB brouchure... Please PM me if you have any request of books, tapes, or other billiard items that you would like in repayment.

I just don't know you well enough to pick something you will enjoy. Help me out here, because I am greatful and want to pay you back!

If TONY is asked he might divulge who else fabricated BUTTS for them......

Haha! Easy there, blackballed! "No more coffee for YOU!" (Java Nazi) And I think you meant "peace", as I assume you don't want a "piece" of ribdoner!! Haha!

Actually, I am not too concerned with who, how, or why the cue was crafted... All I know is that my BB is a damn good cue and it makes me happy to shoot with it. Really, I am just happy to have it around to look at whenever I feel like it.

I think there has been a lot of cuemakers swapping pieces and parts in the past. Don't really see that as a problem.

My comment regarding Scruggs in no way had any implications. I was at the Show and Scruggs introduced me to the Black Boar people, this was their first year. His involvement with them could have been anything from just an advisory nature, to helping them with equipment and actually designing and building cues or he could have just been friends who knows. However, having Tim Scruggs help you start your company would certainly not cast any negative dispersions, most cue makers had help in the beginning.
Thank you, I am glad you liked the brochure, I don't need anything but thank you for asking, just happy you liked it.

Or, you could top being so prude and give us a piece...

CRACK KILLS:eek:  Or, are you "black balled" because you've already sampled fruit of the forbidden tree?? It's my understanding that one of the first things to deteriorate is our ability to communicate on a functional level once we've succumbed to the whispering's of the serpent.

If you are stricken the best therapy is to stay mentally active.

A good project might be to do the necessary research to determine who, in fact, did build black boar butts:)

Based on the latest research if you are stricken, and you SURVIVE, you will probably always be "black balled" PEACE

Oh, I did not take your post the wrong way. I was responding to the other guy that was a little more... sarcastic.

My BB is the best work Barry Manilow ever did!

I don't care if Ol' BM, the patron saint of poor customer service and buggy whip pool cues did help on some BB cues, my cue is still fantastic.
