Black Juma not black with finish

I've recently experimented with using black juma as a joint material. However, it is coming out an off black/greyish color when I put finish on. So, I took the finish off and started over and it happened again. Has anyone else had this problem?

After sanding it try a bit of Behlen Wood Turners finish and let it dry.

Thats odd...I've had no problems. I really like it as it comes out jet black for me. Here is a pic...blk Juma joint collars and buttcap.

I've seen several cues using this material and haven't seen this problem before. I'm not sure if I just got a bad batch of it or not. Or if it's another problem. I really like using it except for this minor set back.

I don't think it would be a "bad batch"...unless its not black without the clear. Is it black before you clear it? If the material is black before you clear it then turns gray afterward then I'd have to believe its an issue with your clear coat.

I recently used some for a shaft collar to match some implex on a scorpion cue. Under bright light, it came out an extremely dark shade of gray for me also. It was as close to jet black as possible, sort of the darkest shade of gray it could be without being black. It worked in my case because it was an exact match to the collar on the butt.

I just finished this one last night and the buttcap and joint collars are black. I sanded them with 600, 1000, then 2000 before i cleared it.

I think that finish is not going to last that long on the Juma.
After sanding it with 2000 grit, you basically polished it and it's not grabbing much.

Really? Dammit! Lol! Oh well, its too late now. How else do you get the lines out of it?

call me joe ill be awake this time for sure.

2000 was way to fine before finish.

sometimes when i get black phenolic and its got some weave showing or just isnt black enough before finish (if its just a solid black ring no ring work) ill put a slight coat of india ink on the phenolic to make it black then apply finish.

although lately since i got a new phenolic supplier i havent had any issues :-)

juma

could it be possible that while sanding the juma got hot enough to get contaminated with wood dust.just a thought.
