Black marks on pool balls....arghhhhhhh

The funny part about this whole thread is the original poster never had his question answered. He has a Gold Crown table. Never once did someone answer this.

Only saying because I am also curious as to any ideas about this problem.

Could it be advisable to change the pockets over to leather?

What is the best brand of pockets to purchase to keep the black marks to a minimum using the plastic/rubber pockets?

Is there something that can be done to the current pockets?

Aloha

I think I basically answered that question by saying that all pockets, drop and ball return have had and still do have problems. There are no leather pockets that fit a Gold Crown, but noting is stopping the OP from gluing in a leather strip to stop the transfer of black plastic on the object balls, or maybe Colonel can submit a blistering letter to Brunswick and complain to them that they should replace all the pockets on all the GCS ever sold for free with pockets that don't leave marks on the balls:thumbup: As I've said, this ball marking problem is NOT exclusive to Diamond, yet there are those that would love to blame Diamond for everything instead of giving them the credit they DO deserve for what they HAVE done so far, and the changes they'll continue in their quest to build the perfect pool tables.

Same for me

I also have a Diamond that leaves marks on balls. Before the Diamond I had a Olhausen and it also left brown marks from the dye on the leather pockets. This may not be what you want to do but it helps a lot. I took a clean rag and bought a quart of denatured alcohol and started removing dye from the leather by rubbing hard and rotating the rag often. At first the dye seems like it will never stop leaving the rag black but after awhile you win. The inside of my pockets are still plenty dark, if you look close enough you can tell that I removed some of the dye but its hard to see because of the way the leading edge of the pocket extends. It takes awhile and a little elbow grease but you will get enough dye off that you will hardly get the marks on the balls any more. You may even have to do it a second time but it is much faster on number 2. I have been meaning to post this for awhile and will get to it soon. I have done this on 2 tables now and have seen no ill effects on the leather. I hope this helps. Jim.

I also have taken care of the black marks from Diamond tables with alcohol. Occasionally when I clean the table, I rub out some of the dye with rag and a little alcohol. But then I follow it up with a treatment of neatsfoot oil to the the leather. ( to prevent the leather from drying out) After I let the oil soak into the leather I wipe the pockets dry so no oil gets on the balls. I have probably treated my pockets this way about four times and I am not seeing any black marks on the balls anymore.

This is surely an easy fix. If/when the pockets get old and worn out, I would replace them with the new pockets offered.

RKC,
Is there a particular manufacture of pocket you like to use on the GC to reduce this problem?

Aloha

Yes, I like the GC 4 drop pockets, only problem is because they're bigger and hold more balls, the don't directly fit the 1's, 2's, or 3's, unless the sub frame is cut back to make more room for the pocket fit under the slate backing. I don't like cutting the pockets up to try and make them fit because that don't work and looks like $hit.

Interesting thread. I'm on my second Diamond 7' Pro Am and would not own any other brand of table. I will talk to Brian next month at the Expo about the new and improved pockets and what would be involved with the swapout.

Yes, a GC IV, and you're right, I have no interest in Diamond.

I figured as much;) but tell me something, did you contact Brunswick for a fix to the end frame members sagging, dropping the level of the end slates, because that's a major problem in the frame design. Hey, who knows, maybe if you contact Brunswick they'll fix it for free beings it's you calling them....as I've never had any luck with them about that design problem, so I've always had to fix it myself for my customers;)

Not sure if this applies to your problem but I used a Kamui Black tip on my cue, miscues tend to leave black scuffs on the cue ball. Not always total miscues but hard low ball hits where the very edge of the tip is striking the cue ball seems to leave small black scuffs that can't easily be wiped off except with ball cleaner...

Like someone said in an earlier post, a new spot will also cause some of the black marks. Check the head ball to see if you are getting more marks on that ball.
