Black smudges on pool balls on a Diamond table?

Diamond has to know about the problem by now. Why not fix it at the factory or instruct the mechanic that sets it up to fix it? Johnnyt
Cuz mink oil and saddle soap sales would PLUMMET and we'd be facing another government bailout situation that could potentially derail the Health Care Bill.

j/k, of course

Smudge remover for balls

I was at the US Open and witnessed the same problem during the tournament. Greg Sullivan used a bottle of hand sanitizer and a cloth to remove the dark smudges on the balls.

It worked perfectly!

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the tips on removing those ugly black spots! I just want to add that I did a little testing to see if the smudges significantly affected the friction between the balls (which could decrease shotmaking consistency.)

I setup frozen ball combination shots with and without the black spots at the contact points to measure how much throw I got at different angles. Initially, I thought the spots might increase friction and cause missed balls due to additional throw. However, I found that they either didn't change - or even slightly reduced - the resulting throw angles.

My testing wasn't extensive or exhaustive by any means, but it was enough to convince me that the spots are mostly an aesthetic issue. I still prefer playing without them, though :)

Smudges

When I asked about this a long time ago, RKC said to use Kiwi Black Shoe Polish and finish it off with saddle soap. The method worked for awhile and then for some reason it stopped working. I think it was because of a build up of polish. I thought about this for a long while and came up with a solution that so far has worked better than any other suggestion.

I use either Mop And Glow or Future floor Polish and thus far has worked great. I don't see any affects on the leather and the floor polish isn't making the leather brittle. I can rifle the balls into the pockets and at this point have never had another black smudge on the balls.

I had this problem with my Diamond Pro Am but don't anymore as I sealed the leather with a leather varnish much like they use for belts. I get an occassional black mark now, but nothing like I did before.

Thanks for the tip about the hand sanitizer, it removed leather marks that even my ballstar wouldn't.

btw, I think this is one of those "good problems to have" situations. It means we all the worlds best table at our house.
