Is there ANYONE out there that likes this stuff? I can't tell you how many cues I see with this type of linen on it...and I don't think it's ever looked good. *LOL* What's the appeal? It must simply be a matter of taste. But god...I think the stuff is absolutely appaling. I've never seen a cue with it where I thought it did the cue any justice...relative to what a solide black wrap, or a black leather/lizard skin wrap would do. It seems to be a fairly prevalent choice for linen wraps too. I just don't understand the allure. Any opinions would be sincerely appreciated.

Have you ever considered that perhaps your taste's may differ from the majority? I only build custom cues, meaning that I don't build cues to just sell but are completely built to order. I have around 30 colors of Irish linen and they all cost me about the same. I also do leather, cork and exotic leather wraps. The person ordering the cue determines what he wants installed and I've found that I probably install 2 black with white spec to all of the other wraps combined. It doesn't show dirt and wear as badly as most other colors.

And it seems to fit a lot more styles than any other linen combo. I have done quite a few and they always come out looking 'made' for that style of cue. Just my opinion

Ask any custom cuemaker, they'll tell you 9 out of ten opt for black with white spec when choosing linen.
So yeah, I'd say there are people out there who like it. :D

LOL:thumbup: funny this question was asked, because I just cut a wrap groove in a new cue that's almost finished, and that's the color I decided on. On this cue I decided on It for a few reasons, first My Blk/white spec roll presses out much nicer then My solid black roll for some reason, so that left me stuck in between on 2 colors to match the black and ivory parts in the cue. The black/white and a white/black color. I was sort of hesitant on the white/black due to the easy staining Dick mentioned, but thought there was a possibility that It may look good, so I hand wrapped it for a inch or so to get and idea, and the black just looked right for this particular cue, It tied the colors in the cue together, and created better contrast where It was needed to Me. Maybe personal preference still yet, but for me, I like many different colors if they go with the cue well, and The blk/white just seemed to be the best match. I also like solid black though. I have It on one of My personal cues.

Oh Yeah BTW, like others mentioned Blk/white is My most requested color also. I get a fair share of solid blk though.

I always thought black with white spec was greatly preferred over solid black. I even remember reading here some builders swore off solid black because it was so difficult to keep it from looking appalling.

A large number of cues have ebony in them, in points and sleeve. The w/b speck ties the color schema together nicely. Far nicer then a solid black would. It is more pleasing to the eye. In my opinion of course.

The majority of the people like black wraps. I sell leather wrap blanks and I sell many more blacks than all the others put together. So with Irish linen solid black has nothing special about it so the black with small white specs has taken over as the most popular color by far. I used to sell Blue Mountain Irish linen and when I got down to a few rolls of Black with White spec I refused to sell any more of it. I have been offered much more than I used to sell it for, but I am saving it for my cues and cues that I rewrap. So to answer your question. YES there are many who like it. It is the majority who like it.

Yeah...it's occurred to me. *laughing* I mean...clearly it must differ. It's just that...the "black" in black and white specked wrap...looks almost like an ashy charcoal gray...more than it does black. It doesn't look anything CLOSE to black next to ebony. It just looks....weird. It's funny you mention all the different types of linen. For all the variety out there...there are many I've never seen on a cue. Thanks for your response Dick. :-)

i dont even carry black with white

i offer

white with black
white with light green
leather

See...now I love white with black. The black on that...is actually black. I don't understand that. The black with white speck...just NEVER looks truly black. It's usually this...lighter grayish color. I'm clearly in the minority here. LOL I'm not knockin' anyone's decision to use the stuff. I just think it's hideous. To each their own. :-)

i am with you guys.i think the black with white spec has become almost a standard b/c it matches up color wise with so many cues.personally i can't stand it either.it seems like there once was another thread similar to this one.it all boils down to opinion really.some like it and some hate it.

B n W is ok by me.
Those all black linen wrap look ugly to me.
White with brown and green look great imo.

Definately with this guy. I never understood the appeal, and it's my least favorite part on my Schon STL-1. So I'm having a wrap groove cut at C and D, but haven't decided on a natural stack or cortland wrap yet.

Unless I get a good trade...eh? eh?? ;)
