Black Widow Billiards DVD

IMO one of the best dvd’s out there right now for the beginner to the advanced player is Jeanette Lee’s 2 vol. Black Widow Billiards. I bought it when I first came back to playing two years ago after some strokes and 2 heart attacks. To make a long story short, the last stroke I had erased just about everything I ever knew about pool. I needed to start again from the basics to the “B” player I had been before the last stroke.

I knew Jeanette knew how to talk to people in a down to earth no snake oil way and gets her point across well. I also knew that her fundamentals were very sound. Also I knew she learned from some of the very best players and instructors around. People like Jerry Briesath, George Breedlove, Mark Wilson, and many of the older champions like Danny Di Liberto. She spent many, many hours with AZ’s own SJM learning 14.1. She learned by a solid foundation, hours and hours or practice, and feel, not systems.

I have a dozen other dvd’s and have got something from just about all of them, but I got more from watching and listening to Jeanette’s dvd than all the others combined. Maybe she came across so clear to me because I’m from NY…I don’t know. I also know there are some men on here that wouldn't be caught dead being caught learning pool from a woman. Johnnyt

I'm not one of them. I'm willing to listen to anyone who notices something i'm doing wrong that I don't realize i'm doing. Sometimes lesser players can help much better players just by watching and pointing out things they see.

I agree Johnnyt. This was one of the first instructional videos I bought when I started playing. It is basic and she does well explaining her topics. To this day, if I'm having a stroke issue I go back to this video and pick something up everytime!

Yep, it's a good refresher course when you're having problems with stroke, pre-shot routine, and many other parts of the game. Johnnyt

Pool is better for having the Widow. She give her alot back to the sport. I know she is very open to sharing knowledge in casual situations at the pool room.

Look at the quality of our own WBM, he would not have the Betmore cup without the widow.

Now I need to get a copy of her DVD.....

While she is certainly an excellent player; she has never had possession of the cup - definitely the only thing lacking from her hall of fame credentials. Though we've played hundreds of times, somehow I've never gotten around to playing a single match for the cup...she has expressed a sincere desire to rip it from my basement, but hasn't happened yet. I receive a substantial handicap in our matches, so at this point she would be a definite underdog.

P.S. - If you check out one of the challenge matches on the BW DVD, you'll see a goofy guy playing her, wearing a black glove...it's me. In the commentary, she and Jerry throw me under the bus for "elevating" my cue too much on a shot - when actually I had to curve the cue ball to make the hit, and did so. I had only been playing a year or two at the time (this DVD was shot quite a while ago; probably years or so), and it was one of the better shots I'd ever hit, but they didn't realize it.

P.P.S. - The basic method taught by Jerry and Jeanette is a powerful tool for the player wishing to become proficient. Mark Wilson's upcoming book is an unbelievably encyclopedic approach to this same system. NOT the only way to become good, but a reliable way to become good (in my view the quickest and best way; especially for someone like me who took up the game late in life, and wanted to get good as quickly as possible).

P.P.P.S. - while sjm and Jeanette have played a lot of pool together, and he is certainly very knowledgeable about 14.1 (and of course his historical knowledge is unparalleled) - JL would be very unhappy if everyone did not know that Gene Nagy was her true inspiration and mentor when it comes to straight pool. I am quite hopeful that sjm would not be offended if I point out that I consider him a definite inspiration; and am hopeful that if he can make a few more visits to Betmore's Basement that I might be able to also consider him a mentor.

Yes, I knew about Gene Nagy. I even had him in the list of names of people that taught her about pool and life. Somehow I omitted his name on the rewrite...sorry about that. Johnnyt
