Bob Runde Schon (1985)

This is the custom I had Bob Runde make for me in March 1985.
We met at the BCA show in Fort Worth and came up with a modified R Series design.
The build became a nightmare because after the cue was finished, I rejected it.
I complained the red veneer was weak and dull, the BEM stain was way too light and
the ivory inlays were smaller and undersized from what we agreed upon.

I was simply behaving like a jerk but Bob graciously agreed to make my cue over. After
the cue was finished, I thought he enscribed it very nicely and I could never part with this cue.
Bob Runde will recall this cue and my horrible behavior but he remained a prince of a guy the entire time.

Tonyboy........The Enscription Is Really Cool

tonyboy59.....the inscription Bob used was just perfect and reflects how hard he had to work to make this cue for me.
It was a surprise and I think adds a special touch. at least for me it does......How often did Bob do anything like that?
So for me, it adds sentimental value and also helps to confirm my cue is just not any R series catalog cue either.

So what did he do?

Double veneer the forearm?

Change veneer color?

Nice cue BTW.

Bob's first attempt produced a cue with a very different red appearance.
It just wasn't bold and striking....admittedly it was red....but I wanted
something akin to a dark red lipstick and in fact gave him some lipstick
colors for the 2nd attempt which he told me ahead of time would be his
last attempt regardless of how the cue turned out.

The cue also had a paper thin black veneer separating the red veneers.
I really didn't care for that look and the inlays I wanted were jumbo size
spears and bars which were larger than what he customarily used in a cue.
I also told Bob that the ivory bars needed to look like piano keys and the
forearm spears had to be mega-sized and dominate the ebony & forearm.

The last change was I wanted a dark stain appearance which the 1st cue did
not have. It was darker than most cues but not at all what I had in mind.
His 2nd attempt, which you have before you, turned out to be a home run
and he got it exactly as we had sketched out at the BCA show. Schon had
only been in business for about 3/1/2 years when I met Bob. But he's a
cue-maker I'd love to own under his own "Runde" name.

p.s. And just in case, any flat faced ivory joint Runde cues with veneers and inlays
weighing around 18.5 ozs. laying around out there? If so, send me a PM and
let's explore a deal that's mutually appealing.
