The last half of Byrne's standard book is devoted to the game. Lots of those patterns are applicable on a pool table as well. Its inexpensive and a great resource.
For 3-cushion, Byrne's three instructional books. For straight rail, get Daly's Billiard Book which can be found for about $20 used. There are several very useful foreign-language books presently in print, but you would need French, German or Spanish. Don't worry too much about systems until you can make the basic shots shown in Byrne. Hoppe's "Billiards As It Should Be Played" is interesting but it has some misleading stuff, such as the diagrams of systems.
