Would it be really bad in value to change it to hardcover?

As far as any value, yes. For you personally, it might be a good idea, with the thought that you're keeping it for yourself, with no intent to sell it later. Of course, with this type of item, if people want it just to read, it might not matter. But, if you just want to read it, you're not going to pay a lot of money for a reading copy.

... I think it's up close to a thousand right now...
No.

March 2003, a little dogeared, $79
March 2003, $66
August 2003, $51
October 2003, $54
November 2003, $86
April 2004, $43
May 2004, $54
August 2005 $325 (yes, three hundred and twenty-five US dollars)
August 2005, $62
December 2006, $76
March 2007, $100
January 2008, worn cover, $68

Those are actual closing prices on eBay.

If anyone has $500 and wants an inscribed copy of Rags to Rifleman, I have a spare. Or even $200. Or $150. Or a copy of Daly's Billiard Book with a good dust jacket as a trade.

The last time I had a book repaired, it cost $100 to repair an antique hardcover. You can go on-line and look for bookbinders. There is a bookbinders association. The book I had repaired was from 1807 and a copy in good condition recently got $1600 on eBay.

If you want a copy of RtoR in good condition, I suggest you buy one rather than have a professional repair the one you have. It will be cheaper. And you can sell your old one to get back some of the cost.

Thanks for the information, Bob. I was too lazy to look it up.

Its at $275 on ebay for a "buy it now" copy. I've seen it as high as $320 but don't really see why this book is worth that much. Its definately a nice book, but only its rarity makes it worth more than 30-40 bucks.

If you look close, you can see this is a second edition.
