Break cue

I've never cared too much about what break cue I use because I think that many of them are the same when you really get down to it. I feel many people are simply paying for a name with break cues. Some tips work better than others for sure but entire cues become sketchy to me.

Granted, this is one of the few areas of pool I haven't looked into extensively so my opinion is largely based on a relatively light amount of personal experience. Anyway, two break cues I've used have left an impact on me: My buddies Predator BK (older model) designed light weight to speed break, and the OB Rift.

Re: Best break cue

IMO, the best break cue on the market is the Mezz powerbreak 2. It hits a ton and the tip gives you great control of the cb. However, I am currently using a Players HXT break/jump and it hits it pretty good as well. I have actually broke and ran racks with this cue. The tip is not a true phenolic, so the control is there. Plus you have the option of breaking it down into two different jump conversions. One is for shorter jumps and one for longer jumps. You can also shorten the break cue to 52" if you want a short, compact break. Predator BK 2 is still a good one as well. These are just my opinion, which I am sure you will hear plenty of others disagree with. To each their own.

My best breaks are with my playing cue.
After all I spend more time with that cue than any other cue.
I still have a break cue and I use it but I always prefer to break with my play cue.
Cue ball control is so easy and I love breaking with a regular leather tip.
Which in my case is usually either a Wizard or an Everest.

Of the break cues I've used (mezz, bk2, j&j, fury and a custom) I gotta give it to the Mezz power break pro with a deep impact pro shaft. It took me a little while to get used to because there is no flex in the shaft unlike the bk2 and all the others I've tried

What do you think the best break cue is on the market?

Lots of other good threads on this stuff if you search for it. Better question might be what is the best break cue "for you"? There are alot of good ones that you'll get a bunch of different answers for, and some not as good. But a good break cue for 1 person might not be so good for you, and vice versa.

I love my Gilbert but I think you can break just as well with a J&J and a Samsara tip. I just keep the Gilbert because it feels right, love the balance and weight...don't mind spending the money when it's only this much on a cue that just feels "right" even if it's not objectively better.

The best breaker IMO is the one that you feel comfy and confident breaking with.

I have a Mezz PB Pro with the H shaft, a PB II with Deep Impact shaft & the 1st gen. OB break cue with the shaft having the wooden ferrule & Samsara tip. Not to mention I've also had the Mezz PB Kai but sold it eventually and the other 2 Mezz cues are going to go as well. All the mezz breakers are definitely top notch but I feel that my stroke & break style is very much compatible with the OB.

Amen brother, Gilbert makes incredible cues.

If you have an opportunity to do so, try a few and see what you like. It may not be the "latest and greatest". I have an action sneaky pete that I put a taom tip on and it hits like a tank. I picked up the action sneaky for $30 so a pretty inexpensive breaker.

That said, I would love to see a video with a radar gun and the top break cues compared to say different house cues with phenolic tips/taom tips. Maybe something dr_dave could look at?

My money is on Omen Custom Cues. You get a ton of cue for the money and I have owned just about every break cue out there. At one time I had an OB, Mezz PB2, and, Omen J/B in my case. I have also tried Gilbert(3), Lomax(3), Pred. BK2...ect.

I found that the Omen and Gilbert also make great playing cues with a tip change.

Tips are as important as what break cue you decide on. I found that for me, Samsara is the right one on whatever cue I use to break. I could not keep the cue ball on the table with the phenolic tips. Again, this is for me and I am sure others out there have just the opposite experience. My point is, decide on which tip works best for your break style.

Question since you have tried most of the quality break cues available.

Have you tried just a cheapie cue with a break tip? If so, how did it compare to the others you have tried? Curious as i havent tried the ob/bk/mezz but the cheapie i have with a taom hits as well as any of the less expensive breakers i hit with (mcdermott, falcon, cuetec, palmer and a few others).

Thanks,

Chris
