Break/jump or a break and a jump?

Hi everyone,

First time posting. I’m in need of a new break cue and a new jump cue. I have a Pechauer sneaky Pete with a harder then hell tip on it and it busts the balls ok. I’ve even tried a Predator BK and it was good, but I didn’t think great. And my jump cue just sucks!! I’m actually looking at the “New” Bungee Blaster and the Sledgehammer. What is the difference between the two? This way I can get two in one. Is this the way to go? The last break/jump cue I’ve used was a falcon cue and it sucked. Or should I go after a separate cue for breaking and one for jumping. Money is really not an issue. If anyone has suggestions on a great break cue and a great jump cue let me here about them. Thanks for the help!!

In my opinion a separate jump cue and a separate break cue is the way to go. This way you can get a jump cue with a phenolic tip/ferrule but keep a hard leather tip on your break cue. The jump cue will now jump even easier than non-phenolic jump cues. And the break cue will not have its control diminished because it would have a conventional hard leather tip.

Phenolic tips/ferrules are great for jumping and for breaking the balls open. But if your stroke is not perfect, they can easily let you down on the break when it comes to controlling the cue ball.

I have a phenolic dime shaped tip on my jump cue and a quarter shaped Tiger break/jump tip on my breaking cue. So I think separate cues are necessary if you want to use different tips.

I've tried a phenolic tip on a break cue, but it miscued once too often and you can only hit dead center (or will miscue), yet it is perfect for a jump cue where you're not slaming the cue as hard as with a break and can hit off center when chalking well.

The Tiger break/jump tip is the best I have found for breaking. I never miscue, it is very hard, yet I can get a little English if needed.

Other than that, I don't think there is much need to get anything special in a jump cue except don't get one with a painted shaft and maybe made of good quality wood.

And for a break cue, I saved a lot of money by not buying a "name", but just buying a regular $150 cue with euro taper (sturdy shaft), metal screw to metal, metal ring to metal ring (very sturdy joint), and a forward balance. Also no wrap.

I don't care what the name of the cue manufacturer is or what the cue looks like except for color - mostly interested in functionality.

Actually I have a Bunjee jump cue. Works just fine and it came with a phenolic tip. The tip was shaped weird when I first got it, so I wrote Bunjee and asked if that was the shape it should have. They said it needed to be shaped and a dime shape was best. Following is a link to a dime or nickel shaping tool. These are good because you can hold them up to the light and see if your tip needs shaping or not. (The curve of your tip will fit the curve of the plastic.) Some cheap tip repair kits sold at Walmart, etc. will have a quarter shape tool.
