I have a ferrule question. I have a customer that would like a phenolic ferrule and he would like it 3/8. It will have a wb tip and will be 12.75mm. My question is will that work out and not crack. Would it have to be caped uncaped just not sure so I thought I sould ask. I refuse to give him somthing that could be a problem down the line.

Thanks
Dustin

Thats only leaving you about 0.065 " of ferrule all the way around.

Cap it

Just MHO, I would use a capped ferrule and leave the cap fairly thick. Should have no problems. Are you using the WB layered tip?

If this is a shaft that already has a ferrule on it, you will end up with a shorter shaft. At 3/8" overall length, it doesn't give you much glueing area if you cap it. If I were to make this a capped ferrule, I would cut the shaft tenon diameter down to 9/32" to give it a little more strength on the wall of the ferrule. Then I would insert the tenon into the ferrule .200" deep. That leaves .175" for the cap. Remember that a tall tip, on a smaller diameter shaft, will have less glueing area & tend to pop off with off center hits, so reduce the tip height. I use a formula of the tip diameter, times .35 to get the tip height.JER

What about threading the ferrule into the shaft wood and not use a standard tenon from the shaft wood? Just a thought! Could be more stable than trying to thread the ferrule onto such a small tenon.

Ask Mr. Reyes about his extensive testing doing this....not a great idea as it cracks the shaft.;)

That was my initial thought though I had not see the test results.

I've made many shafts for billiard cues having 12.5 mm tips. I use a sleeve type ferrule made of Ivorine 3 tube (important - as it is mandrel wound) that is 3/8" long with a 3/8" diameter through hole. I run a 3/8-24 OS tap thru the bore for glue grooves & top it with a Triumph tip. I've never had a tip pop off or a ferrule crack. And this is after pounding heavy billiard balls for years.

Just use a tube ferrule and put a fiber pad on it.

CAN crack the shaft.... I've done quite a few reverse tenons, and if done right, they are very solid. Sometimes this is the only option if someone brings you a shaft with no tenon.

Your customer got a good taste, it looks like mine :) . But I have a 6/8 phenolic ferrule with a 13mm WB.

That doesn't look brown enough to be a WB. It looks more like a White Diamond tip...JER

Thanks for all the help so far. I have a few shafts that I was going to put in the trash but now they can become ginipigs. Whats the min cap thickness on a phenolic that you guys would trust?

Thanks again

On a 1" long ferrule I leave .250 solid for the cap. You don't have that luxury...JER
