Break Shaft?

petticasey

No Irish need apply.
I was wondering if it would be a bad idea to buy a shaft for breaking with my playing cue. I know you are not supposed to break with your player but is this to protect your shaft, you butt, your joint, or all of the above. I am trying to save a little $ so my idea is to get a shaft for my player to break with.

Let my know what you think Thanks.

Edit: Sorry if this is in the wrong section.

Its a myth that break shot will damage the butt or joint on a playing cue. Prolong breaking with your playing stick may eventually flatten out or deform the leather tip. That depends on the hardness of the tip.

If you want to save money, borrow a house stick for the break shot.

Don't do this.

Don't do this. Your going to put years of use on your threads in a month. On-Off-On-Off is not a good idea. Everything wears out in time. Considering you can buy a cheap cue for almost nothing...your approach is misguided.

Nick, you took the words right out of my mouth. It could especially damage threads on a wood to wood joint, if the cue is even the slightest loose. Have you ever broke with a cue and then the joint is loose after wards? Unless you soft break that kind of impact is going to take its toll on anything after awhile. I've seen joint collars crack and pop off after a hard break. I've even seen ivory inlays crack and completely fall out of a cue. I don't know what kind of cue you have, but the shaft may cost just as much as a cheap breaker. I would rather see you buy a cheap Wal-Mart cue before you do that....IMHO..

I'll throw my two cents in the ring...and my opinion is probably worth just that.

I can agree with both sides of the conversation on this one.

IMHO, there will NEVER be any damage to your butt no matter if you break with it or not. You do run a chance of "exploding" your shaft depending on the joint, however, the odds on that are minimum. Again, this is just my opinion.

Regardless if you use a break cue or not you are always going to be faced with premature mushroom if your using a traditional leather tip.

The talk of joint damage because of the unneeded threading and unthreading of the shaft makes me think of numbers.

In a race to 9, you will never break more than 9 times. Regardless if it's a winner breaks match or not. Win or lose, 9 is the maximum number of times you will break the balls. With that being said, the maximum amount of times that you'll screw/unscrew your shaft on the butt is 9 times in one set.

Again, this is only my opinion, but if you're playing with a decently manufactured cue there should be no wear of the joint screws even after 1000 screw/unscrew's.

There are a lot of pro's and short stops on here...and even more A level players and I'm speaking strictly from the majority, the one's that aren't in that sought after group. We don't come close to playing the number of racks that these folks play on a daily/weekly basis. I personally do have a break cue, I know that I don't need it, but that's how I was taught. I'm older now and have a better view on things. I have broke with my playing cue and I regulary break with my backup if I can't find a decent house cue.

Like I said in the beginning, this is my two cents and it may not be worth a damn to some.

Good luck and good racks regardless of what you choose to do.

I agree i would just buy a cheap break cue. Im not going to brag but i been told lots of times i have a monter break there for im not going to put my playing cue thru that type of stress especally with all the ivory inlays i have in it.

Play it safe buy a cheap break cue i know there are places in RI that sell some im from the area as well. Good luck with what ever you decide to go with.

I'd suggest a break cue - for that matter a jump/break cue. You can get some that a lot of people say lots of good things about for less than $125. JJ j/b is spoken of often. There is a thread on jb cue opinions in the Cue Review section.
I'd think, just my opinion, that your momentum would suffer doing what you're thinking of - and, frankly, I think it would "look"...silly...
