I'm new to straight pool, just played my first league match last night. I'm a pretty good shot, i worked through a rack and into the next one once. I scratched on the break shot quite a few times though putting what i thought was the correct english on the ball. Is there any reading material online about that could help me out?

Check out "Rules of Thumb" as well as the other videos and pdf files I have provided. The information in the "Rules of Thumb" file comes directly from Pat Fleming's "Creative Edge" video.

The rest of the links will also provide you with some general information and things to think about when you are on the break ball.

Chapter 5 of Phil Capelle's Play Your Best Straight Pool has helped me tremendously. Having a better idea of where on the stack the CB will hit, and how to predict which side of the impact ball will be hit and how it will behave, has cut my own "sinking whitey" problem.

Edit: I'm sorry. You asked about "online" reading. My apologies for going off the reservation.

No problem. I've seen that book referenced in our facebook group. I think the pool hall might even have a copy. I'll probably pick it up.

Sure - go ahead.

Or he can buy it at our pool hall, Red Shoes since we bought a bunch of them from Phil last month and are advertising them there.

Sorry Dennis I did not know that it was Red Shoes where he was playing, nor did I know that you were advertising for Phil as well.

-Steve

Though having the link there anyways might direct others that read the forums over to Phil.

No problem, Steve.

Phil contacted me on Facebook last month and asked if I could get his books in Red Shoes, so we started out with a dozen. You ought to see about doing that in your joint, unless you already do. So far the eight ball and straight pool books have been moving ok.

I already spoke to the room owner about it, and he hasnt decided.

So far about a dozen guys in my league have picked up the 14.1 Books, based on my endorsement. Just about everyone in my league and players in the room are real serious about their games and improving !!

Over the weekend, I used the slow-motion video capability on my phone to watch how my break shot actually played out. Took a few breaks from each side, and from above and below the stack with the phone recording each one. Seeing how the balls interact was very helpful. If you have the ability to record your breaks, it's a big help.

I just realized i have the same capability on my phone.

we used it a few times already in rotation games to see if a shot was a good hit to make a hit call.

used it twice already on breakshots for my buddy, i can really see how this would be very useful.
