Break Speed - curiousity

im Phat, really P.H.A.T.
So i was just curious what the average pro break speed is, and if anyone knew what an extremely high break speed would be? Just a one of those random useless facts im curious about

Depending upon the Pro, and the game being played this question can be difficult to answer. But, from my limited knowledge I would say that playing the game of 9 ball the break speed normally is between 19 and 25 miles per hour. If they were playing 8 ball I would suspect that the break speed would be less, and I base this upon instruction I have received over the year's do to the strategy difference involved in this game.

An extremely high break speed playing 9 ball would around 27 miles per hour.

I believe the highest break speeds top out around 35mph. Average speed in competition is probably 20-25mph because it provides control and a good spread. If you hit the balls too hard, even if you squat the cue ball good, the other balls tend to kick it around the table more often which leads to more scratches. Also, sometimes on very hard breaks, the balls end up clumped together at the other end of the table which is also not good..

From the TV matches i have seen in 9-Ball i would say the break speed is more in the 17 to 19 range average. at times higher, and every so often lower.

Just my $.02.

Which matches on TV? The WPBA ladies, while they can really hit the rack (Xiating Pan, Jasmin, etc) don't break on par with the men. I think the women would average about what you said. But, men, being men, really smash 'em. Well, american men, those guys over in Europe don't tend to succumb to testosterone as much.

I remember reading here last year sometime, the average men's break speed was 24. I guess they took all the 20's and 28's and averaged them out to 24? *shrug*

bustamante hits them the hardest out of any pros I've seen.

heaviest he broke was 43mph. His most consistent around 33 to 37 I would think.

On sky sports he did a break demonstration thay recorded it with a speed gun he hit it at 37mph.

I'm 63 years old and I was using an old cheap Dufferen 2 piece cue with a Le Pro tip to break. A friend had a break app on his phone and I was always in the 19.35 mph give or take a little. I was hitting them as hard as I could with no regard to cue ball control. He did say that a break cue with a phenolic tip would add about 2 mph.

I wonder if anyone has that on tape I'd love to see that .

I don't believe Busty averages anywhere near 33-37. His average would be probably around 26. Shane's average is from 23-24.

In the US Open 10 Ball last year they used the break speed app, and the average for most of the pros was around 21.

Roberto Gomez probably has the highest average break (not the hardest overall, but average) of around 27-28.

Anything over 24mph is breaking them pretty damn hard.

I know on the accu-stats match between Django and Reyes Busty broke them at 26.9 mph .

43 mph???? Really?? That is very hard to believe.

my guess is baraks, gomez, or nevel. Lots of people can really crack em but control is more important.

I have heard 36 thrown around for baraks but have not seen it clocked. he hit 33 on the clock that I saw.

Most pros can hit 27-30 if they want to but breaking 9-10 ball most are in the 18-22 mph range with control

I think in one of Robert Byrne's books he did a chapter on break speed. IIRC, it was hard to get over 30 mph, the high 20's were the average. And the lighter the cue the higher the speed, opposite of what most players thought, at that time.

From what I've seen using the iPhone Break Speed app, most good amateur players and professionals break around 20 mph. I would consider a soft break to be anything under 17 mph and a very strong break above 22 mph. Only the strongest breakers in the room seem to top over 25 mph. I've never seen 30 mph by anyone though I'd be curious to see what Frankie Hernandez could do.
