Break Stats -- 2012 Mosconi Cup, Dec. 2012

A small correction just in case someone only sees the above-- the final match score was 11-9.

Illegal breaks:

Monday -- 7 (4 wet, 3 dry)
Tuesday -- 3 (2 wet, 1 dry)
Wednesday -- 3 (1 wet, 2 dry)
Thursday -- 2 (both wet)

Total -- 15 (10% of all breaks)
Total that were sole cause of surrender of inning -- 9 (6% of all breaks)
Thanks for all the stats.

The rule (three to the kitchen or pocketed) is in there to prevent soft breaks. I wonder whether it's needed when racking the 9 on the spot. I don't think any of the illegal breaks could be described as "soft."

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing, sometimes balls just kiss in a way that keeps most of them from passing the head string. Maybe they should change the line to the center string. Or just leave it ambiguous and make it a rule that you must break hard. Give the ref authority to warn anyone who flirts with breaking that rule.

There should be a rule that if your ball is HEADING over the headstring, but gets kicked and does not make it, THAT ball counts as over the headstring.

Otherwise, what exactly is the difference?
