Here are the results from the Ronnie Alcano vs. Jayson Shaw match played at the TAR studio in Las Vegas on 3/29/13 and 3/30/13. Alcano won 27-23 on Friday and 27-26 on Saturday. I'll just show the combined results for the two days (103 games).

The conditions included a 9-foot Diamond table with 4 1/2" corner pockets, Simonis 860 cloth, Magic Ball Rack, measles cue ball (different ones each day), winner breaks, rack your own, break from anywhere behind the line, jump cues allowed, 40-sec. shot clock (one extension per rack), and WPA call-pocket rules.

Alcano broke 53 times, with the following results:
  • Made at least one ball (and did not foul) and won the game -- 20 (38%)
  • Made at least one ball (and did not foul) and lost the game -- 5 (9%)
  • Broke dry or fouled but won the game -- 10 (19%)
  • Broke dry or fouled and lost the game -- 18 (34%)

Shaw broke 50 times, with the following results:
  • Made at least one ball (and did not foul) and won the game -- 22 (44%)
  • Made at least one ball (and did not foul) and lost the game -- 11 (22%)
  • Broke dry or fouled but won the game -- 4 (8%)
  • Broke dry or fouled and lost the game -- 13 (26%)

For the two players combined, a ball was made on the break (without fouling) 58 of the 103 games (56%), the breaker won 56 of the 103 games (54%), and the breaker won 42 of the 58 games in which he made a ball on the break (72%).

Break-and-run games:
  • Alcano -- 12 out of 53 (23%)
  • Shaw -- 8 out of 50 (16%)
  • Total -- 20 out of 103 (19%)
These 20 break-and-run games included one 4-pack (by Shaw), three 2-packs (all by Alcano), and ten singles (6 Alcano, 4 Shaw).

Ronnie seemed to be scratching a lot on the break. I think that's the biggest reason he couldn't get ahead for a while after Shaws 4-pack.

Alcano scratched 4 times on Friday and 5 times on Saturday, losing 8 of those 9 games.

Shaw scratched 5 times on Friday and 2 times on Saturday, losing 4 of those 7 games.

Looks like Shane would have crushed these guys just as bad or worse than Dechaine. Shane's BNR percentage (50%) on this table is just sick!
Thanks for the stats!

In Dechaine's 29 breaks, he had:
- 23 wet breaks without fouling (79%)
- 1 foul (3%)
- 5 dry breaks (17%)
- 7 B&R's (24%)
- an average of 1.4 balls pocketed per break, including balls made when he fouled
- an average of 1.3 balls pocketed per break, excluding balls made when he fouled
- an average of 1.7 balls pocketed per break on the 23 wet breaks with no foul

In Alcano's 53 breaks, he had:
- 25 wet breaks without fouling (47%)
- 9 fouls (17%)
- 19 dry breaks without fouling (36%)
- 12 B&R's (23%)

In Shaw's 50 breaks, he had:
- 33 wet breaks without fouling (66%)
- 7 fouls (14%)
- 10 dry breaks without fouling (20%)
- 8 B&R's (16%)
- an average of 1.3 balls pocketed per break, including balls made when he fouled
- an average of 1.1 balls pocketed per break, excluding balls made when he fouled
- an average of 1.7 balls pocketed per break on the 33 wet breaks with no foul

To me it pretty clearly indicates this is more than just a breaking contest, as some claim.
Shaw shoots very very straight, and clearly outbroke ronnie, but just didn't run out
when he needed to. Ronnie had more runout despite over twice as many dry breaks.

You still need to stay focused, not blow position, and not miss to play at the top level.
You can win the breaking contest and still lose the match.
Big breaks + "big" pockets doesn't mean an "average pro" can hang with shane or dennis.
