I guess if you read the rules it is.
I really am not sure.
BCA TAP APA
I guess it matters hows rules and if they rewrote them to exclude my tip.

Very nice.
Is it legal?
randyg

I don't believe this would be legal. 9.d under Equipment Specifications in the BCAPL Rulebook -

"The cue tip must be composed of leather, fibrous, or pliable material. The contacting surface of the cue tip of any cue used for a break shot must be made entirely of leather."

Contact point is leather as long as you dont miss cue.
But also do you like or dislike the cue that is the question?

Tiger already has a break tip that is constructed this way and you may be violating a patent and could potenionally get sued. Keep in mind too that Mike Gulyasy also has the patten on one piece phenolic tips as well. I like the idea and I use the Ice Breaker tip on my jump cue for more controle.

All good points but I think Mikes patten ran out. Tiger not sure if they have a patten. Im not selling the tip or the cue just asking for feed back. There is nothing for sale in this post!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think Mike's patent is for a 1 piece phenolic tip ferrule combination.
From the picture, the ferrule and tip are separate pieces.
The Ice Breaker tip is a tip that needs to be glued onto the ferrule.

I think what he did was combine the two ideas...somewhat...
its a leather tip inlayed into a domed and counterbored ferrule.

I don't believe it is legal. Read below and take note of the amendment. I was told by Bill Stock that the Icebreaker was "NOT" legal. Undoubtedly the contact point of your tip is as much non leather as it is leather. It is a moot point now anyway, you might just as well have it be all phenolic. This design looks like it is just another attempt to skirt the rules but the BCA has already amended the rules to take care of all that. "Leather only no exception".

Phenolic Tip Rule

Effective June 1, 2009, the Official Rules of the BCA Pool League in “Equipment Specifications” under “Cues,” item d. states:

“The cue tip must be composed of leather, fibrous, or pliable material.
Phenolic cue tips are not permitted.”

The BCA Pool League is amending this rule to state: “THE CUE TIP ON BREAK CUES MUST BE MADE OF LEATHER WITH NO NON-LEATHER MATERIALS ADDED TO THE CONTACTING SURFACE.” There have been questions asked, such as: “What if I break with my jump cue?” and similar questions. It is very simple. Whatever cue you break with must have a leather tip.

The reason for this rule is that the BCA Pool League has witnessed too many examples of damaged cue balls. After consultations with Aramith and Simonis, it has been determined the major contributing factor in cue ball damage is the hardness of the tip on break cues.

For several years the WPA has taken the position that the cue tip may not be of a material that can scratch or damage the cue ball. The BCAPL subscribes to the WPA philosophy.

"This policy only applies to break cues. Jump cues are allowed to have a leather or non-leather tip - since it is difficult to stroke with enough force to cause damage."

This rule will be in effect at the BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships and regional tournaments that the BCAPL promotes. Promoters, directors and operators of events such as league play or local tournaments may alter the rules as they see fit.

I really like the looks of your break cue. It looks like the phenolic surrounds the edge of the tip, how do you go about changing tips, or am I looking at it wrong? Really like the looks of the whole cue.

It does not say patented it says copyrighted. You just can't call your tip an Icebreaker or use the word VACULAM

hmmm

Could one take a phenolic ferrule shape it like a tip and affix ground leather shavings with a poxy, thus making a very thin "leather" tip that would grip the ball and take chalk but wouldn't cushion the impact of the harder phenolic it rests on?

Of course the BCA might impose a minimum tip thickness.

In case no one has tried this. I'm claiming it as my idea at least until I learn otherwise.

Most of the guys that use my cues are local money players but in Tri state tour and the Blaze tour. My tip is a legal break tip. The leather is for the control of the cue ball. But the phenolic gives you that crushing break. This tip will never need replacing but if it dose. A good repair can replace it. Good repair guy !!!!!

Not to debate, but how do you consider your tip legal? Was it submitted to the BCA for approval? No one really cares and we all use phenolic tips of some kind but you can't really say it is legal as least not by BCA rules that created all the controversy in the first place. The rules as I remember them call everything above the axes of the shaft the tip. That is the entire surface area.
