Breaking cue options??

Please excuse my noobiness, this is my first post on this website..
Anyways, I have always broke with house cues and am wondering if break cues are worth it and if so, what are the benefits and drawbacks of these options??

->Getting break shaft for my playing cue (Predator P3)?
->Getting break shaft for one of my old cues?
->Buying break cue?

Also, any suggestions for break cue / shaft brand and type?

I like the stiff ness of the break cues and how the weight is in the front of the cue I have a J&J now witch don't cost a lot but works great

Put a hard tip on your old stiff cue, and break with him. Save the money and spend the time in practice. Break cues are good but they are not magic solution.

I ended up just getting a cheap players jump break recently. I'm going to be moving soon so I didn't know how the new scene would take to their house cues (as some places I've been just use slip ons), and I really just bought it for the jump cue. The break is the break, pocket one ball and squat the rock. The rest is your skills on the table.

I think easiest option would be putting a break tip on an existing cue if you have one that is decently stout. I've heard really good things about Samsara tips and that will be going on my break cue next. If you want a new break cue on a budget than I think it's tough to beat the J&J jump/breaks for under $100.

Owning your own break cue allows you to keep from having to find a decent enough house cue to break with every time you have a match or even every break (people will always grab it knowing its the house's and not yours). That being said, getting a break shaft for your player (normal shooting cue) is not a great option. you will always have to change shafts to break and can cause a confusion of surrendering your match while you breakdown your cue. Not to mention that its a pain to do every break. Putting a break shaft on your cheap practice cue is not a bad idea, but then why not just upgrade and purchase a complete break cue?!

What I've done is 2 things. I simply put a hard/phenolic tip on my old cheap practice cue, and also bought a Jump/break cue. Both cues travel as sets for when I chose which playing cue I use. I have a Mezz and a Falcon as my players.

Owning a break cue really only allows you to be sure you are familiar with a cue that you're breaking with, but doesn't really do much in terms of your breaking technique. Think of it this way...which would you rather have? A decent breaking technique with a great cue? OR ..<drum roll please>... a decent cue with a GREAT breaking technique? The answer should be obvious.

Also, any suggestions for break cue / shaft brand Playing 8 ball you have an option of not breaking hard. Nine ball usually breaking hard will serve you well. Breaking hard in eight ball in essence says you are playing run out pool. Assuming you are a league player most players are not that type player. If you play an opponent that you know you have more skills than they do break hard as they will probably not run out when your run out fails. And what happens when you play the great player and you don't get out breaking hard? You cleaned up and made his run out easier! Playing run out pool is the purest way to play absolutely! You never miss and opponent never comes to the table. Learn different breaks and control whitey. Stiff shafts make great breakers. My break cue is a Joe Bouska. Breaks like a freight train.

I used to like to smack the tip on the table bed, but that usually results in having to pick splinters from the cloth.

IMO, the most satisfying way to punish the cue is to walk to your chair and whack it on the seat part. Makes a really awesome noise and the moment of calm between the cue's error and it's death really adds to the scene.

Plus, you only have to pick up the big pieces.

for breaking or jumping the old phenolic tips are out, in my opinion go with a white diamond tip. When I made the switch it was like replacing the old bald tires on my 4x truck with big fat knobby's!

See I was thinking of getting a white diamond and everyone keeps saying get the samsara

The Samsara is better for breaking (will give more spin on the cueball before a miscue),
the White Diamond is better for jumping (harder then the Samsara).

Best tip for jumping is a G10 (in my opinion), best tip for breaking just a hard fairly flat leather tip like a Kamui Hard or Super Pro.
The Samsara and White Diamond are both a compromise between these two, one going slightly more one way then the other.

A jump/break will always be a compromise, a jump cue has different properties then a break cue just like the tip.

I prefer to use my own break cue. I own a Hillbilly Smacker made by Walter Kelley. It is a jump break combo with the shaft, fore arm and butt made from purple heart. The section between the butt and fore arm is maple. It has a hard tip. You can smack the balls with little effort and they scatter.

I am Walter Kelley and yes, I am the maker of the Hillbilly Smacker Jump/Break cue made of purple heart with a samsara tip. Thanks for the comments Compman

No doubt, Samsara break tips are the real deal. I had one installed on my break cue and immediately saw an improvement.

Having said that, breaking the balls well depends a lot more on hitting the rack in the right spot than pure velocity.

Got a J&J jump/break coming in a few days, anyone have anything to say on the quality of the phenolic tip that comes with it?

Hoping to do a good amount of breaking and jumping with it, would a Samsara take away from jumps? Don't quite yet want to splurge on a dedicated cue for each.
