breaking the rack & breaking boards- Chi

In one of the many pool books I read, the author ( senior moment-I forgot the name) mentioned that the highest break speed he recorded was achieved by a martial artist. He never elaborated. The possibilities of systematically focussing & intensifying the same Chi energy we use to break boards or concrete onto the rack come to mind.

On a more subtle level, when I shoot at an object ball, focussing upon it as I pull the trigger, & feel my energy flow, the results are usually quite satisfactory.

There are times when I feel my Chi energy focussing on the rack & I will occasionally involuntarily yell as I follow through. In these moments, the balls have beautifully exploded & multiple balls get pocketed.

My objective is to be more systematic & increase the frequency of this experience.

Can anyone help?

Try some POOL Viagra. It'll help you focus when you pull the trigger, feel your energy flow, yell as you follow through, and your balls will always explode. The results are usually quite satisfactory.

You suffer? benefit? from the Sharapova Syndrome. In your case, it appears when you are inside, so you will be even more annoying than Maria. And if you are not a 6' 3" blonde you won't attract endorsements no matter how many tournaments you win.:D

good humor but . . .

Some good humor in the replies but I think that you are right to think that there are ways to get much stronger breaks. Control is a totally different issue and might be why we aren't seeing more massive breaks. Django and Pan are both on the small side compared to their competitors and break with a lot of power. It would seem that larger players with more strength and leverage would break substantially harder. Of course I noticed that when I was just testing tables and using an offspeed break with my playing stick I seemed to scatter the balls as well as ever so maybe power isn't the answer.

I will bet he was refering to Little David Howard who was heavily into martial arts and with his small frame could out break anyone in the world. He always told everyone it was the martial arts that allowed him to break like that.

Martial Arts/ Pool Connection- no joke

In his video on breaking, Colin Colenso discusses the application of principles he learned from powerlifting. The video is no joke.

Channeling the Chi energy is also an important element of Chinese medicine. Also no joke.

As I see it, the martial arts is grounded in a dialectical relationship among focus & control & speed & power. Stance, grounding, balance, & recruitment of the body's core as well as the mind/body connection all come into play.

The possible applications to ALL aspects of pool seem obvious.

It is still my hope that this thread might give rise to a discourse, which could profitably tap into this connection.

The infantile jokes thus far might merely provide insight into the dominance of Asians in a sport hitherto associated with the West.

I just searched for him on google & amazon to no avail. Can you provide a citation to a work in which he elaborated on his application of martial arts principles to pool?

Perhaps some study of the Kama Sutra would improve your technique to the point that you would no longer require 4 hours to get the job done, regardless of who you had on the pool table.

I wasn't joking
and will be consciously directing my inner energy
through my break, forthwith.

this is a good thread.

So isn't a successful use of chi energy in a break shot just a fancy way of saying good body mechanics and coordination?

nope

focus

to feel, understand and harness the chi
takes a lifetime of discipline and practice.

it has little to do with body mechanics
but the flow and direction of energy.

Do you have any citations to people writing about the application to pool?

Not to someone who believes in chi.

Your focus on breathing & reference to one inch punch make sense. Do you feel that you have utilized martial arts in your break?
