Breaking with your cue?

I know people who swear up and down that you shouldn't break with your playing cue. I know some break cues are designed for a better break but if you use a regular cue are you really risking any damage? I mean a good solid break isn't much harder of a hit than a power draw shot which I will apply without thinking twice about.

What is everyones opinion on this?

Depends how hard you break, and what the cue is made of. If you have a super strong break, I wouldn't advise breaking with an ivory-jointed/ferruled cue, for example.

What about a 314 with a steel joint?

Even if you don't have a monster break, it's no good to break with your playing cue. Breaking with it, will make your tip flat. The more you break, the faster it will go flat. So you need to shape it more often. Shaping it will making you to change your tip more often. All we want is more consistency. Changing your tip often can make your game suffer. You need to learn the tip again. A new tip can play hard or softer than your former tip.

There are still plenty of people that break with their playing cue. Steel is pretty hard to break compared to ivory. Most of the damage I've seen from breaking occurs at the ferrule and the tip. Cracking the ferrule and mushrooming the tip seem to be the most common.

Talking about the joint, it doesn't matter if it's steel or ivory. It will not break for sure. Just don't press your shaft on the table after you break with it. A friend of mine breaks with a cue with wooden joint thread for many years (more than 10 years for sure). He has a pretty strong break. Mostly the balls a jumping of the table. His ferrule cracked but, the cue still has no damages at all.

what's the point in breaking with your playing cue? why bash it as hard as you can when you can use a dedicated cue for that. with a hard break it's a lot harder hit than a power draw shot.

Thanks guys. I guess either some house lumber or a proper break cue would be best.

Agreed, use a house or dedicated breaking cue.

I disagree. Power draw (applying backspin from across table) is almost the same except you drill it with low spin. Also, when I break I am not trying to bash it as hard as I can because I always send the cue ball off the table. I still slam the rack nicely though.

I agree, either a house cue, or a proper break cue is best. I would reccomend a J&J with a WD tip. dooziexx sells the J&J J/B cues for a very reasonable price, and he is great to deal with. I have this setup and it breaks fantastic. Where do you usually play? If you would like we can meet up and you can give my J&J a whirl. I will be at Dr. Cues tonite for BCA.

The ferrule of a 314 will crack for sure. It has a really soft ferrule. Cracks easily.

Justin Bergman plays with a 314 and breaks with his playing cue.

Personally, I use a SledgeHammer and love it.

I appreciate the offer but I don't think I can make it today. I usually play at the Seed 2 in bellevue for APA.

True, SVB cracks em with his player also

The bottom line is, if breaking with your playing cue ( NON ivory joint or ferrule ) does anything to it other than mushrooming the tip, it was probably a stink pickle to begin with

SHANE DOES PRETTY WELL WITH NO BREAK CUE

I love the feel and control I have breaking with my playing cue (Lucasi/Zshaft)... I can't do it right now though.... My ferrule is cracked. :-/

Played with a guy about a month ago and he breaks with his fairly fancy Gus Szamboti. He always has and it is over 20 years old. You have to love it.
