Breaking Woes Continue

Now that winter has arrived I have gotten the urge to play/practice some. And I've been racking and breaking racks of 9-Ball quite a bit the last few weeks. And once again without hardly any success. Success being making a ball and having a runnable rack. This problem has plagued me for years now on this Gold Crown IV.

Maybe after my mechanic tightens the pockets to 4.5" and puts new SuperSpeed cushions on things might change a little bit. That sounds, logically, that it would make the table worse but I don't see how it could be any worse than it is now.

Deja Vu all over again.

How have you not jumped out of your bedroom window, above your parents garage yet??

Consider purchasing the BreakRak. It is a tremendously effective break training tool.

I mean this with no disrespect.

The first thing you need to do is learn to rack! The next thing is you need to learn how to break the rack YOU just put together!

I have yet to get on a table that after breaking 20 or so racks I haven't figured out how to make either the 1 or the wing ball!

The breakrak thing won't do you any good of you're not racking properly(consistently)!!!!

Although the breakrak will help with speed and accuracy consistently, what good is it if your rack is inconsistent!

Believe it or not, small gaps here and there in a rack is a good thing(at times)! And then sometimes it isn't! Again, it's all about learning how to rack!

If your pockets are smaller than 4&1/4,, you will have issues, but past that, learn to rack and break consistently!

Ok, I'm not a big breaker or rotation games specialist, but I can get a ball and a decent layout most of the time in 9 ball.
Here are some questions that you need to answer for anybody to be able to help you:

1. Where do you place the cue ball?
2. At what speed are you hitting the break?
3. Are you hitting the one ball squarely?
4. Does your cueball have spin on it, if so, in what direction is it going?
5. Is your 1 ball hitting the side rail above, or below the side pocket, typically?
6. Are you making the corner ball frequently, or rarely?

Without knowing the answers to any of these questions, I'd advice you to try the following things:

A. Move the cueball to about a balls with away from the side rail.
B. Break with a medium speed. You should be at a comfortable speed for you, where you can make accurate adjustments up or down. Start at 60-70% of your maximum.
C. Use center ball, or a hair above, depending on the speed used.
D. Note the behavior of the 1 ball. If it goes below the side, then you can increase the speed ever so slightly to get it into the side pocket, and vice versa if it goes above.
E. If you make the corner ball consistently, then you should not try to make the one, but rather play position on it!

I'm sorry if the above advice is basic, but if you have your own table and can't get consistent breaking on it, you are doing something seriously wrong! If you try the above and tell us what happens, I'm sure someone will tell you how to adjust speed or where to move your cueball.

And OF COURSE all of the above is meaningless, unless you have a fairly tight rack. If you have gaps in the wrong places, or inconsistencies in your racking, then you won't ever be consistent.

DCP, I have only one piece of advice, enjoy the beautiful game.

And just out of curiosity how how does your b'n'r ratio on your Gold Crown IV compare with other tables you play regularly ?

Dave <-- remembers the plague

PS for those who do not http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=4362 from 2004 is a good place to start the saga

PPS enjoy the beautiful game
