THE SILENCER

what is the fairest way to judge who is the greatest pool player alive? i believe it is the old format of round robin. everyone plays everyone at least once, who ever has the best score/average is the winner of the tournament. this surely is a much more accurate way of measuring who the "best" player is, wouldn't you agree?

Round Robin is a great tournament format and we should see more of it, however I was very suprised that The Silencer thinks it's a great way to determine the best player alive. From his earlier posts I would assume that the best way was to watch the newest flash in the pan euro-kid lose to an American icon in the Mosconi Cup and then proclaiming him supreme! How about a round robin featuring Efren, Busta, Earl, Alex, Rodney, Allison and NVDB! That way Allison and Nick can show their dominance to the world, it ought to be quite a final! See you on the table.........Marc

In the old days, they often used a round robin format to choose the world champion, but usually only invited 8 players. Since the games were only to 125, you still had the element of luck (ie. running into a "hot player"). The only championships Willie Mosconi lost were under this format (the tie breaker was total number of balls). The champion could always accept challenges (as in boxing), and these were often multi-city extravaganza's where the challenger and champ would play to 2,000 or 2,500. Mosconi only lost 1 of these affairs (to Ralph Greenleaf, well before Mosconi's prime). One or two years later, Mosconi destroyed Greenleaf in a long, multi-city contest (but Greenleaf was on his way down - their ages were different enough that they never played each other at their peak of proficiency). Mosconi was emphatic that no pool player alive (or dead) could ever have beaten him in a long race; his offensive skills were unparalleled and in a long race the crafty defensive players were at a little bit of disadvantage. My father always thought Mosconi (before his stroke) was a much better shotmaker than Luther Lassiter (who he placed at number 2).

The old days

Back in the late 60's and early 70's, Fred Whalen ran a few World Championship round robins tourneys , 20 players - everyone played everyone else..once.
The tourney took three weeks ... matches were played in the afternoons and at night. I talked to quite a few players during this event and about the only complaint was....lotsa expenses when your'e away from home. The best thing for "us spectators", we GOT TO WATCH most of these players play around the LA area from day to day... for at least three weeks ... when they were NOT playing in the tourney!!!

I think the only way to have some kind of TOP quality Round Robin event is to have (state/regional ) playoffs , then send the top 32 players to the "three week " event ...with the qualified players having expenses paid for those three weeks from the qualifying tourney payoffs and entry funds!

I think that would be awesome. I wonder if it could ever be possible that the organizers of the regionals would put a part of their $ into an event for their top points finishers.

Sure would be cool!

rouond robin ...

Most players already know who will probably win when they look at the tournament bracket, at least within 2-3 players ... They aren't stupid ...

The Missouri State 9-Ball is played round robin in the first round. There are 10 flights of 8 with the top two from each flight, and two wildcards, advancing to a final 12 player double elimination format on the last day. It's a pretty good format and you get to play a lot of pool for your $100 entry fee.

Possible...yes?

If the state / regional tourneys would support the final event, just the continued advertising about how the players got there, and the description of the previous regional events, should get more players INTO the NEXT regional event! Remember we have to PROVE to everyone that there is a LEGITAMATE pot at the end of the rainbow.
I think there is NO limit on the amount of players who would be willing to "TAKE A SHOT" at the "BIG BOYS!"

and so on...

By the way...I plan to open a room later this year and I will run tourneys to qualify players to go to bigger events "all expenses paid"!
I will take about ten percent of the tourney pots entry fees which will be added to the final tourney pot. I may even get some outside sponsors to add to the pot!

I know you're probably talking about singles, but we use round robin in the team event at Valley Forge. There were 24 groups of 4 teams. They advanced the top teams (group winners and next best records) from that to a single elimination event.

I really enjoyed it because you're guaranteed 3 matches for you money. It gives everyone a chance to play and surpisingly, it doesn't take as long as I thought it would.
